Minnesota 17, Washington 13 Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Rookie Toby Gerhart and Adrian Peterson each scored a touchdown on the ground, as the Minnesota Vikings held off the Washington Redskins, 17-13, in Leslie Frazier's debut as head coach. The Vikings, who lost to the Saints in the NFC championship game last season, got off to a 3-7 start this year. That led to Minnesota's firing of Brad Childress on Monday. Frazier, who was the defensive coordinator, was promoted to interim head coach.

The end is near. Or so it appears. Then again, with Brett Favre it's always hard to tell. But with the news Monday that the Minnesota Vikings quarterback has two small fractures in his left ankle, it seems likely that his NFL-record streak of 291 consecutive starts soon will be coming to an end. Favre has not been ruled out for the Week 8 game at New England but was clearly in pain during Sunday night's 28-24 loss at Green Bay....

Kevin Kolb will make his second straight start in place of the injured Michael Vick when the Philadelphia Eagles host Atlanta on Sunday. Eagles coach Andy Reid says Vick practiced Friday for the first time since sustaining a rib cartilage injury on Oct. 3. There's a chance Vick will be the backup quarterback against his former team. Kolb began the season as the starter, but lost his job after sustaining a concussion in Week 1 because Vick was sensational in his absence.

Life without wide receiver Randy Moss begins this week for the New England Patriots, and football fans are eager to see how the franchise will fare. The Ravens, who will be the first opponent to meet the Moss-less Patriots, will be just as curious. "In my opinion, it's up in the air," cornerback Chris Carr said Wednesday. "Since the trade, they had a bye week, so who knows how they're going to look. … So it's going to be interesting to see. We're going to find out just like everybody else how different their offense is going to be. " So while the shock of New England's decision to ship Moss to the Minnesota Vikings for a third-round pick in next year's draft has subsided, the questions over how the offense will take advantage of quarterback Tom Brady's strong arm without a downfield threat like Moss continue to fly. What won't be debated is Moss' still-unfolding legacy.

Scribblings from the Week 5 notebook: No matter what the statistics say, Randy Moss attracts double coverage. The Patriots are going to miss that. Said his former teammate with the Vikings, ESPN's Cris Carter: "There's no way you take Randy Moss away from any quarterback in this league and that quarterback gets better. It's not possible. This is a game about talented players. But you can only do so much if you don't have the weapons. " If you think New England is going to fall apart, remember the Patriots won three Super Bowls without Moss and without a star receiver.

NEW ORLEANS — Lights, camera … satisfaction? The Vikings will be looking for some of that Thursday night when they open the NFL season against the Saints in a rematch of last season's NFC championship game. Statistically, the Vikings thoroughly outplayed the Saints when they last met — except for five turnovers. The Saints took advantage of those miscues and rode them all the way to Super Bowl XLIV, where they knocked off the Colts to claim their first Lombardi Trophy.

Minnesota Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson (Aberdeen) is confident he will be healed from a broken leg and ready to play when training camp starts in eight weeks. Henderson said Friday the rehabilitation from surgery to repair his left leg is "right on track." He said he sees no reason he wouldn't be in the starting lineup for the season opener at New Orleans on Sept. 9. Henderson promised he'll be on the field when two-a-day practices begin in late July but acknowledged his activity will be up to the coaches.
