The man-up unit put the Stevenson men's lacrosse team up for good. Just 11 seconds after No. 8 Lynchburg was flagged for a slashing penalty, the No. 5 Mustangs took advantage of their extra-man opportunity when junior attackman Chris Dashiell found sophomore midfielder Michael Crowe wide open on the left side of the crease for a 12-11 win in overtime at Mustang Stadium on Saturday night. Crowe's first goal of the game, with 2:43 left in the extra four-minute period, occurred as a result of the Hornets' defensive focus on sophomore attackman Mark Pannenton, who leads Stevenson with six man-up goals.

Maryland has the highest scoring offense in Division I women's lacrosse, but the Terps ' attack needed a jump-start from its defense Saturday against James Madison. After the No. 1 Terps (11-0) fell behind early, they used a stifling midfield defense to handcuff the No. 17 Dukes and start their offense rolling toward an 18-8 victory at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Dukes jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks in part to winning the first two draws and they shut out the Terps , who went into the game averaging 16.40 goals, for nearly 13 minutes.

By the time Century got possession for the first time Saturday at C. Milton Wright, the Knights already were in big trouble. After winning the game's first four draws and scoring four quick goals, the No. 10 Mustangs remained in command in an 11-7 victory over the No. 6 Knights. C. Milton Wright (1-0) suffered a 10-8 loss to Class 3A-2A defending state champion Century (1-1) in last year's state semifinals, and the defeat is still fresh for the Mustangs. But C. Milton Wright coach Brent Ritz said this is a new season and, even though they remember last year's playoff loss, he wanted his team to start on its new turf field with a strong performance.

When the St. Paul's boys lacrosse team looked back on what went wrong in its disappointing 3-15 season last year, an early overtime loss to Hereford was one of the worst memories. So when the Crusaders found themselves down only two goals to the visiting Bulls after clearly being outplayed in the first half Friday, they once again faced an early crossroads. This time, St. Paul's left the field satisfied. The No. 6 Crusaders dominated No. 8 Hereford in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals after the break for an 8-4 win. Henry Riehl, Carter Flaig and Mikey Wynne each scored two goals for St. Paul's (5-0)

Minutes after No. 15 Loyola had put the finishing touches on a convincing 13-8 victory over host Georgetown at Multi-Sport Field Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., Josh Hawkins appeared barely winded. But looks can be deceiving. “My calves started going by the end of the game,” the senior short-stick defensive midfielder said as a wave of relief passed over his face. “I'm dead. I need an ice bath or something. I'm tired.” Hawkins expended himself against the Hoyas in his first contest since sitting out the first six games of the season for violating an unspecified team rule, and the Greyhounds (5-2)

COLLEGE PARK - It was growing late in the first half and Maryland trailed Niagara by six points. The sparse, fidgety Comcast Center crowd had to be wondering when and if the Terps would check in mentally for their National Invitation Tournament opener. Led by Nick Faust, second-seeded Maryland woke up and used its press and fast break effectively in a second-half surge to rout seventh-seeded Niagara, 86-70, and advance to the second round before an announced 4,053. Loyola men's basketball coach Jimmy Patsos minced no words when leading scorer Dylon Cormier was shut out in the first half Tuesday against Boston University. "I said 'Dylon, they're wearing your jersey [in the stands] and you have no points,'" Patsos said. "He said 'I got it.'" Did he ever. Cormier scored all 16 of his points in the last 11 minutes as the Greyhounds rallied past Boston University, 70-63, before an announced 984 at Reitz Arena in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Tewaaraton Award finalist Mike Sawyer will be a game-time decision for No. 15 Loyola's road game at Georgetown Wednesday night, coach Charley Toomey confirmed Tuesday morning. The senior attackman did not play in the team's 13-7 victory over Air Force last Saturday and attempted just three shots (scoring once) in a 9-8 loss to then-unranked Duke on March 8 after suffering an unspecified injury in an 8-6 win against Bellarmine on March 2. Toomey described Sawyer, who has registered 13 goals and two assists in six games, as “day-to-day.” “Because he had an injury and was unable to play, we just felt like staying in class and staying back here was probably the right thing to do rather than take him out of class just to travel,” Toomey said of the decision of traveling to Denver without Sawyer last weekend.

UMBC has split its last two contests, and the starting goalkeeper for both games has been sophomore Wes DiRito. DiRito was on the losing end of a 13-7 setback to Johns Hopkins on March 8, but the Odenton native who graduated from DeMatha earned his first career victory as the Retrievers battered High Point, 16-11, last Saturday. DiRito succeeded senior Adam Cohen, who started the first four contests of the season en route to a 13.33 goals-against average and a .412 save percentage.
