Four unlicensed video poker machines were seized yesterday from a Veterans of Foreign Wars club in Crisfield during a series of gambling raids across Maryland by the State Police.They served search warrants to vending machine businesses in Carroll, Prince George's and Somerset counties, seizing records in connection with a nine-month undercover investigation into the transportation and use of gambling machines in Maryland and across state lines, authorities said last night.Thomas Rye, 49, of Jarrettsville, owner of LBJ Enterprises, and John Obradovic, 48, of Severna Park, owner of JMO Associates, were charged with illegal possession of slot machines.

Melvin Lovell, a retired welder for DCA Food Industries Inc. in Jessup, died Friday of cancer at Mercy Medical Center.Mr. Lovell, 84, lived in the Hanover Square Apartments in South Baltimore for the past decade.He retired from DCA Food in 1960 and moved with his wife to Brigantine, N.J., where they lived until 1980.In New Jersey, Mr. Lovell served as commander of an American Legion Post and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Fond of surf fishing, he was a member of the Brigantine Sportsmen's Association.

Services for Vincent Lewis Slater of Odenton are scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills. Interment follows at Epiphany Episcopal Cemetery.Mr. Slater, 73, died of cardiac arrestNov. 27 at Harbor Hospital.Born in Maryland, Mr. Slater earned a Purple Heart in the Army during World War II. He retired in 1972 from the Fire Department with over 25 years of service.A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 199, Mr. Slater enjoyed gardening and baseball.

The Hampstead War Memorial Committee is seeking veterans of foreign wars who are interested in having his or her name placed on a plaque at the Hampstead War Memorial. A copy of a veteran's discharge papers, Department of Defense Form DD-214 or other proof of military history is required.Families of veterans who were killed or are missing in action, as well as residents of Alesia, Carrollton, Finksburg, Hampstead, Lineboro, Manchester, Millers, Snydersburg and Upperco, are welcome to have their names placed on a new plaque.

Services for Robert Lynn Dula Sr. Glen Burnie will take place at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Singleton Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will follow at the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery in Crownsville.Mr. Dula, 45, died Oct.15 in Virginia after a three-year illness. The North Carolina native, a self employed home improvements specialist, served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was awared a Purple Heart.He was a member of the Severn Baptist Church. Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post No.276.

Marshall Randolph Welk, a longtime bricklayer, died of pneumonia June 25 at Baltimore County General Hospital. He was 83.Mr. Welk, who in recent years had been a resident at several nursing homes, was born in Baltimore and lived most of his life in Hampden. At an early age, he became a bricklayer, working for several local firms.From 1942 to 1945, he was an infantryman in the Army, serving in Africa, Italy and France. He attained the rank of sergeant.Mr. Welk was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

This month is National Hospital Volunteer Month in Maryland veterans hospitals.The state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary president are encouraging community members to contact their local veterans hospital volunteer services.The Yingling-Ridgely Post 7472 Ladies Auxiliary and Junior Girls Unit of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ellicott City visited the Baltimore VA Medical Center Tuesday, and gave books, popcorn, soda and Valentine's cards to the veterans.

Francis Edward Roddy, a retired federal worker and former Veterans of Foreign Wars post commander who as a baby had a role in a silent film, died of respiratory failure Tuesday at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Lutherville man was 89. Mr. Roddy was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen in New York City, where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army during World War II. His military service took him to the Pacific, where he fought until the end of the conflict. He participated in the liberation of the Philippines.
