On December 25, 2008, VASHTI C. GOLDSTEIN; beloved wife of Joseph A. Goldstein; devoted mother of Anya R. Cook; loving sister of Kenneth V. Cook and Isora E. Cook; dear sister-in-law of Harry Goldstein and Edward (Ruth) Goldstein. She is also survived by her aunt Dorothy Frier and a host of other friends and relatives. On Wednesday, friends may call at VAUGHN C. GREENE FUNERAL SERVICES (RANDALLSTOWN), 8728 Liberty Road from 1 to 5 P.M. On Friday, Mrs. Goldstein will lie in state at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 7200 Liberty Road at Latham Road, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 A.M with services to follow.

Betty Jean Diggs, a Social Security Administration worker, died in her sleep March 1 at Mercy Medical Center two days after undergoing knee replacement surgery. The Gwynn Oak resident was 61. Born Betty Jean Davis in Baltimore and raised on Alto Road, she was a 1963 graduate of Carver Vocational-Technical High School and attended what is now Coppin State University. She joined the federal agency in 1968 and worked at Woodlawn and at its downtown office in numerous positions -- last as a technician in the agency's Division of Employer Services.

Joseph M. Burgess, 75, steel worker, choir member Joseph Matthew Burgess, a retired steel worker and a tenor who sang with church choirs, died April 11 of asbestosis at home in West Baltimore. He was 75. Mr. Burgess was a gas attendant in the mills at Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Sparrows Point plant for 33 years. He retired in 1986. The native of Littleton, N.C., graduated from high school there and moved to Baltimore in 1951. He had been a resident of Mount Holly Street since 1965. He was a former church member and sang with the men's choruses at Mount Hope Baptist Church and Liberty Church of God. Since 1997, he had been a member and trustee of Miracle Baptist Church.
