Q.This summer I used Vaseline to rid my children of head lice. It worked, but getting the Vaseline out of the hair can be tricky. This is what I did after leaving the Vaseline on their heads overnight: I applied baby oil to the hair, completely saturating it. Next, using a fine-tooth comb, I combed the hair, and the petroleum jelly slid out. It took a fair bit of combing until all the Vaseline was out. Then I shampooed about four or five times. I recommend doing all this outside. My kids wore their bathing suits and sat in plastic lawn chairs with their heads tilted back: You wouldn't want this greasy mess in your tub. The kids complained, of course, because I washed their hair with cold water from the outside faucet, but it was well worth it. We got rid of the lice!

When new Washington Capitals coach Dale Hunter was a player, it was virtually mandatory to mention his propensity for practical jokes. What sorts of things? Well, he would substitute steak sauce for chocolate syrup during team meals and smear "gooey substances on telephone earpieces," according to the Globe and Mail. He would nail teammates' gloves to lockers and shoes to the ground, and put Vaseline in combs and brushes before team pictures, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Q. I've had head lice for weeks and have tried RID, Nix and Vaseline to get rid of them. The lice disappear for about two days and then return. I'm single, so I do the best I can to remove the nits myself. Please help! How common is it to have resistant head lice? A. No one knows how prevalent resistant lice are, but a Harvard study showed that this is a real problem in some parts of the United States. For resistant lice, suffocation with Vaseline works, although the nits must still be removed.

I'm 34. No, I'm 35. I just lied about my age for the first time.I'm 35 and feel a little old for being so young. Things are happening to me. I'm starting to lie about my age, for one thing. And it takes me longer to get ready for bed. This bed thing really bothers me.When I was 25 (a great age and what a figure), I remember just going to bed. So simple. I brushed my teeth, took care of some other quick business, and did a free fall into bed. Maybe I didn't brush sometimes. Maybe I left a light on all night.

Maybe it takes one to know one.Orioles manager Phil Regan says Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ricky Bones is a cheater? Well, you should have heard what umpires and opposing teams were saying about Regan 27 years ago. They did not accuse him of throwing scuffed baseballs, as Regan did with Bones after Monday's home opener, but many said spitballs and greaseballs revitalized Regan's pitching career.Regan said his reputation helped him go after Bones."I figure they gave me all that grief for all those years -- I might as well give it to somebody else," Regan said before yesterday's game.

My daughter had three stubborn warts on the bottom of her foot that hurt her terribly. We tried salicylic acid tape from the pharmacy. It always burned off all the good skin and left the wart intact. Duct tape didn't work, and neither did freezing them off at the doctor's office. They kept coming back. I made a paste of fresh-scraped turmeric root and taped it on the warts. The warts were completely gone in three applications. Bright-pink, fresh, smooth skin grew in the black-specked holes left behind after the bandage was removed.

You have often mentioned unusual uses for Vicks VapoRub. I decided to try it on my cracked heels. For the past three years I have applied every possible cream, but nothing worked until I used Vicks. Amazingly, in a couple of applications, deep and painful cracks healed. The only drawback: The cracks return if I stop. Vicks VapoRub contains many essential oils in a base of petroleum jelly. If plain petrolatum (such as Vaseline) doesn't help your cracked heels, the essential oils might be playing a role.

American football, which evolved from soccer and rugby, was developed on college campuses in the Northeast beginning in 1880. The first intercollegiate "football" game, between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869, actually was a soccer match. The early games were violent, filled with pushing and shoving.James Bowen, a mechanical-bank designer for J&E Stevens of Cromwell, Conn., created a cast-iron football bank named "A Calamity," which featured three players. The ball carrier moved forward when a coin was placed in the slot.

Q. My husband works in construction finishing Sheet-rock. Sandpaper and spackle dust dry his hands out so the tips of his fingers are often split and painful. A friend suggested wrapping the split fingertips with electrical tape. Amazingly, his fingers healed in a couple of days. This is a trick of the trade I thought you would like to know. A.Thanks for this remedy. People also report success putting Vaseline, Vicks VapoRub, Bag Balm or Udder Cream on their hands at night and covering them with cotton gloves.
