When Institute of Notre Dame girls soccer coach Dave Schaeffer scheduled the Indians to play in the Kenwood Invitational Cup, which was held Saturday, he had no idea 11 of his juniors and seniors would be on a peer ministry retreat for the weekend. Now, Schaeffer might think about scheduling a tournament on the same weekend next year. With mostly young varsity players and six girls up from the JV, the unranked Indians upset No. 12 Kenwood, 2-1, to win the White Division of the tournament.

Unlike the misadventures described at Colorado and elsewhere, high school football recruits signed by the University of Maryland recounted relatively tame goings-on during their official visits there. Recruits said their activities ranged from video games and ice skating to forays to clubs along Route 1 in College Park. "Some might have shown up thinking something else might happen," said Erin Henderson, a quarterback/linebacker from Aberdeen High. "The truth is, nobody knows for sure what goes on during these weekends except for the players."

Annapolis Panthers1996 record: 9-4.Coach: Stephanie Rowland Hunt.Top players: Mattie Phillips, Jr., A; Kaitlin Stone, Jr., A; Amy Deans, Sr., D; Susan Wynkroop, Sr., D; Emily Childs, So., G.Outlook: Talk to Hunt about the upcoming season and time and time again she'll mention how excited her Panthers are to get things started. Last year's 9-4 season -- Hunt's first as head coach -- is a big reason why. The 11 varsity players returning from that squad is another. A strong defense played a big role in last year's success and with Deans and Wynkroop back to lead the way, along with the emergence of Childs in goal, it will once again be a tough chore for opposing offenses to score goals.

At 6 feet 8, Calvert Hall's Jon Graham is more than enough for any team to handle. Add in fellow forward Damion Lee and the task becomes that much more daunting. Last night against visiting Milford Mill, the junior duo dominated the inside at both ends - scoring, rebounding and blocking shots to lead the No. 6 Cardinals to a sturdy 67-55 win over the No. 8 Millers. Graham scored 17 points, blocked five shots and made the Millers (0-1) often settle for outside shots. Lee, 6-4, scored a game-high 20 and helped spark a pivotal second-quarter stretch in which the Cardinals (2-0)

The Carver A&T and Chesapeake boys varsity basketball teams have forfeited the rest of their seasons, Baltimore County coordinator of athletics Ron Belinko confirmed yesterday. Both teams had depleted rosters as the result of a fight between the teams during their game Jan. 4 at Carver A&T. County rules stipulate that if a player throws a punch, he is automatically suspended for the season. The teams had forfeited two games last week while school administrators investigated whether further action was required.

The No. 3-ranked Severna Park Falcons made their annual early-season statement yesterday, the one that says field hockey in Anne Arundel County always starts with them. In their season opener at Chesapeake, the Falcons trudged through soggy field conditions as well as a young Cougars defense and took home a comfortable 6-0 win. There was an added story line to the game: Chesapeake's first-year coach Melissa Page is a 1996 Severna Park graduate who played on three state title teams for Falcons coach Lil Shelton.
