There is Chris Brown, these days sporting a neck tattoo that looks like ex-girlfriend Rihanna after he bloodied and bruised her. And Charlie Sheen, whose assault of his wife is somehow just another part of his troubled yet comedic persona. Sharon Love is just warming up on the issue of relationship violence. Normally soft-spoken, and by nature a sunny personality, Love grows outraged as the subject takes her from feckless celebrities to the anonymous victims sheltered by such groups as Baltimore's House of Ruth "They're hiding from these men. They're the ones hiding, and these men are running free," she says.

Left with just 14 varsity football players following a spate of injuries, Century High School, which is in its first year, said yesterday that it will suspend its JV program for three weeks, elevating all of that team's players to the varsity. The school made the decision Monday morning following meetings between varsity coach Matt Flanagan, athletic director Craig Walker and principal Andrew Cockley. Parents of JV players were informed through a memo Monday afternoon. "It's either this or we just forfeit," Flanagan said.

Man, 24, indicted on arson charges in burning of car A Chesapeake Beach man who suffered serious burns July 4 was indicted Friday on charges of burning his car for the insurance money because the 1992 Lexus cost too much to fix. In a four-count indictment, an Anne Arundel County grand jury accused Cordell T. Holland, 24, of second-degree arson, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and related charges. Fire marshals said Holland admitted that he left the car in a field in rural Lothian, doused it with a few gallons of gasoline and set it ablaze for an expected $6,000 in insurance money he hoped to put toward a new car. But Holland burned himself and spent about 10 days in Prince George's Hospital Center, later reporting the car stolen, investigators said.

Athletic directors and football coaches from Baltimore's private school league, which is considering a merger with the Washington-area Interstate Athletic Conference, will answer concerns among IAC officials tomorrow night, likely determining whether the union occurs. The meeting will take place at Loyola Blakefield at 7. "We have to address each of their concerns, and after we do that, we'll give our answers back to them, and they'll have to determine among their heads of schools and athletic directors by Nov. 15 whether they'll come in or not," said Rick Diggs, executive director of the Baltimore area's three-tiered Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Maryland has so many quality running backs that coach Mark Duffner might switch former Wilde Lake High star Raphael Wall to another position."We're awfully strong there, so we might move one or two," Duffner said. "Wall can play a number of positions -- running back, slot back [receiver] or defensive back."With the varsity players not due to report until Aug. 13, Duffner said the coaching staff is "still making decisions and nothing [is] final yet." But, he added, Wall, because of his versatility, has "great possibilities."

* FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (1-21): Only three players remain from last season, and two are guards, so coach Jeff Cook plans to use a more run-oriented offense. Junior point G Dave Layman (5-7) and senior shooting G Larry Haines (5-10) will carry much of the scoring load.* LIBERTY (5-17): Ten of Liberty's losses last season were by 10 points or fewer . G Neal Lampron (5-11), one of two returning seniors, will provide the outside scoring punch.* NORTH CARROLL (12-12): North Carroll will stick with its patient half-court, three-guard offense.
