Christian Varner never will forget the look in Dona Rawlings-Varner's tear-filled eyes three years ago, when his behavior earned him expulsion from Randallstown High. "She just cried and cried and couldn't stop. She kept saying, over and over, `You told me that you were going to do well, go to college,' " said Varner, recalling that his mother had to face a principal, an athletic director and a football coach. All told her that her son, found with a concealed weapon -- box cutters -- could no longer attend school, much less play football for the Rams.

"I had a little jitters coming out during warm-ups," said Varner, who saw his first collegiate action again against the Huskies. "But once I had my first contact, I was all right.

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University has long offered refuge for students whose deafness made them feel out of place. But that sense of comfort was shattered last weekend by the killing of a freshman in a dormitory where another student had been found slain in September. Fear and shock have spread across the campus since the body of Benjamin Varner, a 19-year-old freshman from San Antonio, Texas, was found early Saturday morning. Varner, an enthusiastic student who had spoken of one day joining the Peace Corps, had told his father that he was frightened by the earlier campus killing.

When Woodlawn's Justin Ross met visiting Randallstown's Chris Varner at midfield before yesterday's game, he told his childhood buddy, "It's me and you: Quarterback vs. quarterback." Ross then won the battle of juniors, leading Woodlawn to a 12-6 Baltimore County 4A-3A League victory - Woodlawn's sixth straight - in a game largely played in ankle-deep mud. Ross (8-for-12 passing, 118 yards) tied the game at 6-6 with his second-period, 13-yard scoring pass to Lewan Leslie (four receptions, 68 yards)
