William M. Dugdale, a retired account manager and vice chairman of VanSant Dugdale & Co. Inc., once Baltimore's largest advertising agency, died Thursday of cancer at Union Memorial Hospital. He was 84 and lived at Elkridge Estates. The former longtime Roland Park resident worked for 35 years at VanSant Dugdale, which his father, H. Kirkus Dugdale, co-founded with Wilbur VanSant in 1925. The agency -- which had such blue-chip clients as Martin-Marietta, United States Fidelity & Guaranty, Maryland National Bank, Davison Chemical Company Division of W. R. Grace & Co., Allegheny Airlines, and Baltimore Paint and Chemical Corp.

J. Stanley Paulus, noted advertising executive who helped create the "Charm City" and "Trash Ball" advertising campaigns in the 1970s, died Monday of colon cancer at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. He was 64 and lived in Phoenix.Mr. Paulus was senior vice president and creative director of VanSant Dugdale advertising agency, where his conceptual ideas resulted in many award-winning regional, national and international advertising campaigns for such clients as Black & Decker US Inc., US Airways, Roy Rogers restaurants and Nestle.

A veteran Hilton hotel manager has been named general manager of the publicly financed convention hotel now under construction near Oriole Park. Linda Norman has been selected by the Baltimore Hotel Corp. to head the 757-room Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel, the Baltimore Development Corp. announced yesterday. Norman, who begins her new job in mid-August, is charged with overseeing the construction of the $230 million hotel, which is scheduled to open a year later. Norman, who has worked for Hilton for 20 years, has been general manager of the Hilton Los Angeles/Glendale Hotel for the past three years.

Services for Mary Caroline Gebelein, who was active in the Woman's Club of Roland Park and other groups, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, 5407 N. Charles St.Mrs. Gebelein, who was 70, died Tuesday of cancer at her home on St. Albans Way.Known to her friends as Miggy, she had chaired the drama committee and was a member of other committees at the Woman's Club of Roland Park, of which her mother had been a member and her grandmother a founder.A former member of the Three Arts Club of Homeland, she also belonged to the United Methodist Women at Grace Church and was a volunteer for many years at Maryland General Hospital.

Baltimore advertising agency Gray, Kirk/VanSant is expanding its grocery chain client base with Buffalo, N.Y.-based Tops Markets Inc., a $5 million account, the agency said %J yesterday.Tops Markets operates 219 stores, including Tops Friendly Markets in New York and Pennsylvania, and Finast Friendly Markets in Ohio. It previously used two agencies."The Gray, Kirk/VanSant team demonstrated strong knowledge of the grocery store chain industry, as well as an intuitive understanding of our markets," said Mike Coppola, executive vice president of Tops, which decided to consolidate its marketing.

A new owner's planned conversion of the Tremont Plaza Hotel in downtown Baltimore to an Embassy Suites, a Hilton Worldwide brand, would threaten the city-owned Hilton Baltimore hotel as it struggles to reach stability following the recession, city development officials have told Hilton executives. The Baltimore Hotel Corp., which owns and developed the 757-room Hilton on West Pratt Street, said the lodging giant's plans to offer a franchise for a Hilton-branded hotel to the new Tremont owner violates the spirit of a hotel operating agreement between Hilton and the city.
