The McDonogh boys lacrosse team watched their four-goal lead vanish quickly in the fourth quarter of Saturday's match against St. Mary's. But the No. 5 Eagles bounced back in overtime. Junior midfielder Austin Frederick scored with 54 seconds left in the 4-minute overtime period to lift the Eagles to a 12-11 win over the No.4 Saints in Annapolis. Frederick finished three goals and three assists, Evan Glaser had four goals and an assist and goalie Nick Doyle stopped 10 shots to help pull out the win. On Friday, December 30, 2005, Charles J. Valis, originally of Baltimore, beloved husband of Anne F. Valis for 57 years, loving father of Charles J. Valis Jr. and his wife Debbie, Janet Cramer and her husband Bert, Karen Lamdin and her husband Gary, and predeceased by his son Jerry Valis, devoted and loving grandfather to Kate, Carin, Jamie, Bert, Julie, Mark and Eric, survived by his brother Anthony Valis. He was a WWII veteran, active member of the telephone pioneers and a volunteer at the Bayonet Point Hospital.

Mildred L. Valis, a former parochial school teacher who later was a sales associate, died Thursday of cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care. The longtime Towson Estates resident was 73. Mildred L. Braun was born in Baltimore and raised near Union Square. She attended Southern High School. In 1955, she married Wenceslaus J. "Jim" Valis, and the couple settled on Denwood Avenue where they lived until moving to Towson Estates in 1960. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mrs. Valis taught at Most Precious Blood and Immaculate Conception parochial schools.

50 years agoAfter a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad trainman reported that his locker had been entered, clothing and a wallet stolen at Mount Airy Tuesday, state police arrested Constantis Valis, New York City, wearing the clothing. The wallet is still missing, but Valis, who said he is a seaman, is in our jail charged with breaking and entering and larceny. On Saturday, McMorris and the handful of other computer musicians who form the group VALIS (short for Vast Active Laptop Intelligence System), will plug into a P.A. upstairs at the Ottobar and deliver a few hours of live, improvised drum and bass.
