"I gave the Bears every opportunity but they moved on. All around, Baltimore is just a better deal for me and my family.

Things have always been a bit uncertain for Second Chance, a salvage depot and nonprofit organization that has built a loyal following among homeowners, interior designers, commercial builders and art students seeking one-of-a-kind home items - bathtubs, shutters, mantelpieces, you name it - from old structures. Since opening in 2003 in a leased warehouse in the crumbling industrial area just south of M&T Bank Stadium, Second Chance has grown to occupy several leased warehouses.

Sean Lane, founder of local technology firm BTS, doesn't care that most other companies its size don't provide full health benefits for employees and their dependents, including domestic partners. Nor do they hold once-a-week catered lunches for their staff. Or practically demand workers take a break at the company-owned condominium in Florida, with the firm kicking in $250 in mad money. Transamerica Life Insurance Co. has begun putting up its namesake sign at 100 Light St., transforming Baltimore's skyline once again. About 800 employees of the arm of Dutch insurer Aegon are expected to move from the firm's current midtown Baltimore offices to Transamerica Tower over the next several months. The move fills a void in the building left behind by Legg Mason, which moved its employees to a new structure in Harbor East in 2009. Transamerica agreed last year to lease the top nine floors, or about 171,000 square feet, of the 35-story skyscraper.
