It's official: summer is over, although there are plenty of chances for a weekend getaway through the fall. Whether you are planning for leaf-peeping trips or just fantasizing about the return of beach season, TripAdvisor's vacation rental calculator , which I found through Lifehacker , can help you decide whether you'd save much by reserving a vacation rental instead of a hotel. The calculator adjusts its findings based on the number of people in your party and the number of nights as well as how frequently you plan to eat out as opposed to making meals at home.

More than 150 years ago, famed philosopher Henry David Thoreau published his iconic book “Walden,” which chronicled his two years living as one with nature in a cabin set on Walden Pond in Massachusetts. Today, some travelers who seek a Walden-esque experience still want 21st-century amenities and perks. At Blue Moon Rising, a new eco-friendly vacation village nestled in the mountains of Western Maryland, they'll find the best of both worlds. Following a soft opening in fall 2013, the retreat officially opened to guests June 27. Tucked away on 15 wooded acres replete with towering oak, hickory and hemlock trees, various flora, fauna and a quiet stream, the property boasts 14 environmentally conscious, compact and energy-efficient cabins (ranging from 300 to 450 square feet)

Summer-vacation planning often involves exploring and choosing among hotels and motels. But you have other choices for accommodations. Whether headed to the beach, the mountains, a lake or a theme park, more families are renting full vacation houses, cabins and villas. Rental homes, besides being much more spacious and with more amenities, can be less expensive than renting a hotel room. In fact, renting a house instead of a hotel room is often a better choice, contends Christine Karpinski, author of How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner and Profit from Your Vacation Home Dream: The Complete Guide to a Savvy Financial and Emotional Investment.

With one more weekend to go to seal the deal on summer 2011, Ocean City is warning visitors not to get scammed on vacation rentals. Ocean City Police said they recently received two complaints involving promised vacation rentals that were paid for in advance and turned out to be a scam. Both of the victims were using Craigslist.com to find rentals in Ocean City and in both cases, paid several hundred dollars for rentals that did not exist. Police are investigating but said they believe the perpetrators of the internet scam to be from outside the United States, leaving recovery of any lost funds unlikely.

Vacationers seeking a true home away from home have been fairly well served by the Web's many house rental services. But options have recently improved, thanks partly to the re-emergence, after a two-year hiatus, of one of the more useful vacation home sites. VacationSpot.com, which was owned by Expedia but suspended operations in 2003 because Expedia wanted to focus its attention on the travel package market, has recently reappeared -- this time under the corporate flag of Expedia's sister company, Hotels.

New Year's Eve 1999 is fast approaching, and on the day before it my husband and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Our four children and their families live in four different time zones. I would like to gather everyone somewhere warm and appealing to all ages and not break the bank in doing so. I have thought of San Diego. I was wondering if you could make any suggestions where to stay? You are smart to plan now.Not only are hotel rooms and resorts filling up for that historic moment, but coordinating that large a group takes more time than most people realize.

Two couples are looking for a flat in London for four or five days next summer. How can we find a rental? There are several companies that offer short-term rentals of homes or apartments in London, usually near Underground stations and within walking distance of tourist sights and shopping. Always check to see what the minimum stay is. Here are a few worth checking out: Emperors Gate Short Stay Apartments (www.apartment-hotels.com) has one-bedroom suites in the southwest section of central London near several Underground stops.
