Like most of her college basketball peers, Maryland's Alyssa Thomas will be monitoring the U.S. Olympic women's team during the London Games, imagining what it might be like to represent her country on such a grand scale. Thomas' credentials at this stage of her career certainly have validated the junior forward's Olympic aspirations. As the first sophomore in school history to be named first-team All-American, Thomas won Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, ACC tournament Most Valuable Player and pushed the Terrapins to within one victory of the Final Four.

Et cetera Hogg wins third BMGC Amateur Stroke Play championship Serge Hogg , tied for the lead after a second-round 68, recorded a 1-over-par 72 and a 54-hole total of 210 in winning the 45th annual Amateur Stroke Play championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation at Mount Pleasant Golf Course. It was his third win in the event, and the first since 1997. Three-time champion Billy Wingerd (71) followed at 212, trailed by Brett Williams , whose opening-day 66 was the low round of the tournament (75-213)

Maryland signee Jake Layman will represent the United States in Brazil starting this weekend. Layman, a 6-foot-8 small forward, made the final cut for USA Basketball's 12-man U18 team . The future Terp will continue training with the U.S. team in Colorado Springs, Colo., before departing Tuesday for Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil -- home of the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Team USA opens FIBA play against the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a game against Mexico on Sunday at 1 p.m., and Brazil next Monday at 5 p.m. Semifinals are set for June 19, with the gold-medal game scheduled for June 20. Et cetera Randallstown alum Womack is Houston-bound Former Randallstown basketball guard Tione Womack has signed with Houston. The former first-team All-Metro player, who led the Rams to two state titles, has spent the past two years at Hagerstown Community College. Womack averaged 10 points, 7.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9steals as a sophomore. "Tione has a pass-first mentality that creates easy scoring opportunities for his teammates and is a quick, solid on-ball defender," Cougars coach James Dickey said in a news release.

That is why the biggest name left off the team is bound to come from the NBA's strongest position, point guard. For instance, the Clippers' Chauncey Billups and Thunder's Russell Westbrook, who made the 20-man cut, really have no chance at making the team. That's because there are three phenomenal players at that position in the Clippers' Chris Paul, Nets' Deron Williams and Bulls' Derrick Rose.

Lake Clifton boys basketball coach Herman "Tree" Harried was conducting morning practice on Martin Luther King Jr. Day when a visitor stopped by. It was one of his former players who just wanted to tell Harried that he was doing well with a good job and family. He also said 'Thanks.' Harried, a Dunbar and Syracuse grad who went on to play professional basketball overseas, has piled up 256 wins in his 15 years as coach at Lake Clifton....
