Justin Upton is attracting a ton of attention as the winter meetings approach, but it's still not clear if the Diamondbacks will trade him. The Red Sox have been all in from the minute it became known the right fielder could be traded. … Tuesday is the deadline for the 35 players, including the White Sox's Paul Konerko and J.J. Putz, offered arbitration to accept those offers. Only a few are likely to do so. Among those believed to be considering the offers are Juan Uribe (Giants)

Under a printed head scarf and the warm sun, Candice Abdal-Rahim served hundreds of strangers food and drink that she could not sample until sundown. She was observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan by fasting and performing an act of charity at the annual Day of Dignity, a national effort organized by Islamic Relief and the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Serving others "makes the day go quicker," said Abdal-Rahim, a city schools administrator. This was the fifth year the Day of Dignity, marked in 22 cities over 10 different weekends, was observed in Baltimore.

CHICAGO - For a franchise that had just won its first postseason series, the Tampa Bay Rays showed they certainly know how to celebrate. The champagne-soaked visitors' locker room at U.S. Cellular Field resembled a frat party after the 6-2 victory yesterday over the White Sox had clinched the American League Division Series, three games to one. "To do this in my hometown ... my family was all here," Rays outfielder Cliff Floyd said. "We look forward to the next round." The Rays parlayed the pitching of starter Andy Sonnanstine and the hitting of B.J. Upton, who homered twice, and Carlos Pena, who went 3-for-4, to dispatch the Sox. "I just tried to keep an even keel and work to my strengths," said Sonnanstine, who went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

A cold drizzle fell on Ernest Richardson as he stood in line yesterday on a West Baltimore sidewalk. The 58-year-old disabled Vietnam veteran did not seem to mind. Good things in life require sacrifice, he said, and he was waiting for some very good things: free food, blankets and toiletries at the Masjid Ul-Haqq mosque in the Upton neighborhood. "We're having a rough time financially at the moment," he said, referring to himself and his wife, Elaine, also disabled. "This is a blessing."

A new city commission has been given the task of devising a plan to renovate and reuse P.S. 103, a historic West Baltimore elementary school attended by Thurgood Marshall and other African-Americans during the days of segregation. Built in 1877, P.S. 103 sits at 1315 Division St. and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Marshall attended P.S. 103 from 1914 to 1920, and it is there he first experienced the inequities of school segregation. From P.S. 103 he rose to become a legendary civil rights lawyer, acclaimed for his role in Brown v. Board of Education, the legal case that outlawed school segregation.

A Baltimore historian who was killed Sunday when an Upton rowhouse collapsed was renovating the site into a neighborhood cultural center and had the city's permission to do so, officials confirmed yesterday. Alvin Brunson, 49, won approval to take ownership of the home at 562 Wilson St. last year and turn it into an extension of the nonprofit Center for Cultural Education, which he directed, according to Board of Estimates records. Brunson, named "Best Community Historian" by the Baltimore City Paper in 2005, had spent years working on the site as an attraction for young people and tourists to learn the history of the neighborhood, friends said.
