When you're upset with someone you care about, you clam up, keep your distance.He/she tells you she hates it when you clam up (or pout, as she puts it). And it infuriates her that when you decide to end your silence (to quit punishing her, as she puts it) you expect to go on as if nothing had happened. You say you're not pouting, you're just upset and don't want to talk about it. And that once you've gotten over it, there's no reason to stay gloomy. Let's get on with things.Sounds like you're copping out. And being unfair.

If you don't have enough drama in your life, you need to chaperone a party for a group of seventh-graders.We recently had a party for our son's 13th birthday. We rented a Holiday Inn function room, on the theory that it was roomier and less flammable than our house. We hired DJs to play ugly music really loud so that the youngsters would enjoy it. We ordered a large quantity of cold cuts for the youngsters to ignore, as well as a nice fresh vegetable platter for them to actively avoid. We stood near the door and greeted the guests and their parents as they arrived.

At the least, the bureaucrats on the NCAA men's basketball committee have done a good job finding the cream in a field's crop. The past five NCAA champions, and six of the past seven, were No. 1 seeds. It's a 64-team tournament, however, and there's a crowded middle ground in between the sure winners and losers. Boston College went into the Big East tournament on the bubble but came out a No. 5 seed. Will anyone blink if Maryland, another No. 5, loses to the College of Charleston, No. 12 seed in the Southeast but No. 16 in the national rankings?

Q. I am a single mother of a 3 1/2 -year-old girl and 1 1/2 -year-old boy. My daughter has fears that I don't think a child her age should have. Whenever I take her to daycare, she thinks I am mad at her and leaving her there as a punishment. She cries on the way there. When I leave, she gets very upset -- even though I explain that I have to go to work. I understand her fear of abandonment, because her father keeps walking in and out of her life. But I can't soothe her enough to make her understand that I'll never leave her. Is this normal?

They were friends for months before they started dating seriously, and Mandy was thrilled to discover that Rob was as much in love with her as she was with him. But though she tries to please him, he consistently finds fault.
