Can you recommend one exercise - other than the bench press, which I hate - to strengthen my arms overall on days when I don't have time for my full upper body weights circuit? Rowing is a rock-solid pick for working the upper body if you have time for only one machine. Why? The rowing machine, or ergometer, gives you a full-body workout with particular emphasis on the arms, shoulders and upper back. Just be sure to keep your core muscles tight when rowing. This will help you avoid using your lower back to pull.

I am going to take a class in smooth-water kayaking. According to the instructor, I should be exercising my upper body and arms. What exercises would be good for this? I belong to a gym and have access to exercise equipment. To answer your question, we enlisted the help of Edith Callahan, certified athletic trainer at the Downtown Merritt Athletic Club. The best way for you to train, says Callahan, is to mimic the kayaking motion as closely as possible. The simplest way to do this is to break down the activity into steps, and re-create each stage with free weights.

Relatives, friends, former schoolmates and police were trying to make sense yesterday out of the killing of an 18-year-old Columbia resident as he paid a visit to a Pasadena neighborhood early Saturday. Pictures of Jerome Isaiah Johnson -- the victim of Anne Arundel County's eighth homicide this year -- were spread across the dining room table at the home of his grandmother on Sea Shadow Lane, where he had lived. They showed a smiling, handsome young man, one in cap and gown and holding an achievement award on graduation day in May at Hammond High School; in another, he is wearing a tuxedo, and his arms are around his girlfriend on prom night.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta wasn't as concerned with the numbers on the scoreboard in Wednesday afternoon's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates as he was with the fraction-of-a-second change in his delivery. Arrieta, making his second Grapefruit League start, yielded four runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings in the Orioles' 11-5 loss to the Pirates at Ed Smith Stadium, but he said he's still refining his mechanics after concentrating this spring on improving his time to the plate.
