State and county officials appeared ready last night to proceed with plans for construction of an interchange at Route 175 and Snowden River Parkway, as no significant opposition was voiced at the only public meeting scheduled to be held on the project. The $8 million partial-cloverleaf interchange -- the proposal preferred by the state and county -- was chosen unanimously by residents instead of a more modest plan to increase the number of lanes on the parkway. The interchange would allow traffic on Route 175 to cross Snowden River Parkway without stopping, alleviating congestion at one of Howard County's busiest intersections.

BERLIN -- Bjorn Engholm, the leader of the Social Democratic opposition in parliament, may be forced to give up his ambition to be head of Germany, leaving Chancellor Helmut Kohl virtually unopposed in next year's elections.Accused of "bending the truth" about when he knew of a 6-year-old election scandal, Mr. Engholm must defend himself before the leadership committee of the Social Democratic Party. If the allegations prove correct, he will almost certainly be asked to give up his plans to run against Mr. Kohl in elections late next year.

Call it the campaign that isn't.Dennis M. Sweeney organized a staff of volunteers, garnered political contributions, and printed thousands of campaign fliers -- expecting a heated race in his bid for a Howard Circuit Court judgeship. But the incumbent is a shoo-in, barring an unexpected write-in campaign between now and tomorrow's general election.5l Judge Sweeney handily won the Democratic and Republican primaries over two challengers last spring, capturing about 62 percent of the votes and making him unopposed in the general election for a 15-year term on the county bench.
