On the same day that fans will gather to watch the Orioles open their season in Tampa against the Rays, another event will be highlighting baseball in Baltimore. “The President's Cup,” a documentary on Baltimore's annual high school baseball tournament, debuts at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Baltimore's Wright Theater. The film is directed by University of Baltimore associate professor Julie Simon and chronicles the 2012 edition of the tournament, which is sponsored by City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and draws more than a dozen public and private high schools from around the city.

BWI Business Partnership's April signature breakfast will be held Wednesday, April 17 from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve, 7795 Arundel Mills Boulevard, in Hanover. Keynote speaker Maravene Loeschke, president of Towson University, will talk about new initiatives at Towson. Towson University is one of the largest public universities in Maryland, and has interdisciplinary partnerships with public and private institutions, which provide research, internship and jobs for students.

Sodexo Inc. plans to lay off 190 workers in May at its operations at Loyola University Maryland, the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation said Thursday. The Gaithersburg-based company told regulators that the school at 4501 N. Charles St., Baltimore, will no longer be using Sodexo's food services, causing the company to close its facility there and lay off workers on May 31. "Sodexo has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Loyola University Maryland and unfortunately they've decided to go in a different direction with their campus dining program," said spokesman Enrico Dinges in an email.

Towson University is trying to reassure its student population and address the concerns of national civil rights groups after a pro-white race student group recently announced it would conduct crime-watching patrols at night. Matthew Heimbach, a Towson senior and founder of the White Student Union, made headlines across the country earlier this week for the patrols, which he said were in response to a spike in black-on-white crime. Heimbach said the patrol members would be unarmed except for flashlights and pepper spray, though he had previously told Towson's student newspaper his members have gotten firearms training.

As a graduate of Towson University, I have been ashamed of my alma mater just three times in the past 47 years. The first time was during the 10-month tenure of a previous president who squandered both funds and public trust by running up huge bills on his lavish home. The second was when Towson's Minnegan Stadium was renamed to "raise funds" in 2002, dishonoring my beloved coach and lowering my respect for the university. The third occurred on March 8, when Towson President Maravene Loeschke announced the school was cutting baseball and men's soccer from its athletic program ("Ire grows after Towson president cuts teams," March 24)

This is prettay, prettay, prettay cool. Yet again, Harford County's lack of pull in the circles of influence in Annapolis has proven not only embarrassing, but also detrimental to the county's citizenry. Last week, the Maryland Board of Public Works voted, 2-1, to delay appropriating money to allow construction to start on a Harford County campus of Towson University that's planned as a major addition to and partnership with Harford Community College. To be clear, this has all the trappings of a tempest in a teapot.

A 17-year-old Hampton University student drowned while attending a pool party on the Virginia campus on Wednesday. University officials said David Esan, of Randallstown, was at a party at Holland Hall when he drowned. University spokeswoman Yuri Milligan said Esan was spotted in the gymnasium pool after the party broke up, at about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday. She said several people called 911 to report the drowning. "Lifeguards and paramedics attempted to revive him on the scene," she reported in a press release.

Loyola men's basketball coach Jimmy Patsos minced no words when leading scorer Dylon Cormier was shut out in the first half Tuesday against Boston University. "I said 'Dylon, they're wearing your jersey [in the stands] and you have no points,'" Patsos said. "He said 'I got it.'" Did he ever. Cormier scored all 16 of his points in the last 11 minutes as the Greyhounds rallied past Boston University, 70-63, before an announced 984 at Reitz Arena in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
