The suspension of a campus fraternity during an investigation of alleged hazing and injuries to pledges was announced yesterday by the University of Maryland at College Park.Omega Psi Phi's suspension was prompted by an anonymous letter sent to university officials and police, as well as area news organizations.The letter named victims of alleged beatings as well as the "big brothers" of the fraternity who the writer said were responsible for the assaults."The university police immediately began an investigation which may result in the filing of criminal and/or campus disciplinary charges as the facts warrant," Dr. William L. Thomas Jr., the campus vice president for student affairs, said in a prepared statement.

COLLEGE PARK -- Four University of Maryland footballplayers and a former player have been accused of breaking into an off-campus fraternity house, and have been served criminal summonses within the past two days.Starting junior wide receiver Marcus Badgett, 22, and redshirt freshman reserve center Paul Gunsser, 20, were served Tuesday, along with senior Joel Goode, 22. Goode, a former outside linebacker, is no longer on the team. His eligibility expired after last season.Reserves Dan Prunzik, 21, a junior wide receiver, and freshman defensive end Mike Rodgers, 19, received notices Monday, campus police said.

A mood of apprehension and fear enveloped the Towson State University campus yesterday in the wake of the second rape of a student in less than six months -- this one after an abduction in daylight.The victim, a 20-year-old commuter student, was confronted in the new Towsontown garage on campus at midday Thursday, forced at knifepoint to drive to wooded area 20 miles away in Baltimore County, then raped and abandoned.Students who gathered yesterday at the University Union PTC building held mixed views on whether the university has enough security and what might be improved.
