Ken Sander of York, Pa., admits it might be selective memory, "but ... it seems to me the Mid-Atlantic is having fewer nor'easters than 30-40 years ago. ... Has the storm track shifted?" The University of Virginia's nor'easter expert, Robert E. Davis, says these powerful winter storms have become fewer, but more severe. In years like this one, more storms take an inland, "continental" route. In other years, more rake the coastline as nor'easters, clobbering us and New England. Davis sees no clear trend either way.

Richard and Martha Dauphinais of Bel Air are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter Jennifer Lynn to David Zachary Cearfoss, son of Victoria Cearfoss of Catonsville and the late David A. Cearfoss. The couple was married on September 30, 2006, at the Bel Air United Methodist Church by the Reverend Barry Hidey. The reception followed immediately at the Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air. Jennifer's maid of honor was Meredith Demaso, her college roommate, and her attendants were Katie Heer, Briana Tiede, Jessica Cearfoss, sister of the groom, Laura Lokey-Flippo, Lauren Egee, Karen Tiedemann and Brian Ellis.

MRS. DORIS MARIE KNORR, 74, of Frederick, formerly of Charlottesville, VA and Baltimore, MD died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of 55 years to Dr. Norman J. Knorr. Born in Baltimore, MD on January 9, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Felix H. and Ida Weinel Morrison. Doris attended Catholic University, the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia taking courses in architecture, art and psychology. In Charlottesville she volunteered to work for Recording for the Blind.

U.S. Senate candidate Josh Rales, an affluent Montgomery County businessman who has not run for office before, launched his first television ads of the campaign yesterday. Rales, a Democrat, is introducing himself to voters with two 30-second spots that will run in the Baltimore, Washington and Salisbury media markets. In one ad, Rales says that the money spent on the war in Iraq could have been used to fix the nation's schools and health care system. "I'll vote to bring our troops home within a year, and I'll work for an alternative energy policy so we never have to fight this kind of war again," Rales says.

University of Virginia men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia thought April 8 might be the day his team would receive its comeuppance. Having beaten Maryland on the road a week earlier by 10 goals, the Cavaliers had concluded an unusually flat week of practice, before traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C. Virginia warmed up sluggishly in the pouring rain as it prepared to play rival North Carolina, which had just been eliminated from postseason contention. "I turned to one of my assistants and told him I didn't have a good feeling about this," Starsia said.

An evening reception followed at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Darby is a Principal Consultant at SRA International in Arlington, VA and is the daughter of Charles and Paulette Chellis of Granite, MD. The groom is a Systems Administrator at EDS in Washington, DC and is the son of Marcy Bade of Jeffersonton, VA and James Bade of Penhook, VA. The bride is a graduate of Seton Keough High School, American University where she received her degree in Environmental Studies, and University of Virginia where she received her masters degree in Management Information Systems.

Douglas F. Gansler Occupation: Montgomery County state's attorney. Gansler is serving his second term. He oversees 65 prosecutors in Maryland's largest jurisdiction. In the news: Virginia Gov. Mark Warner announced last week that convicted snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo will be transferred to Maryland so that Montgomery County, the site of six of the 10 Washington-area killings, can prosecute them. The trials will focus national attention on the prosecutor's office as Gansler approaches an expected run for state attorney general next year.

Alfred Hall Drummond Jr., a retired Social Security Administration personnel director who composed dozens of New York Times and Sun crossword puzzles, died of a heart attack March 27 at Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Salem, N.J. The former Timonium resident was 76. Born in Allentown, Pa., Mr. Drummond sang bass with the Bethlehem Bach Choir during high school. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Raven Society. He studied at the Wharton School of Finance in Philadelphia before serving in the Air Force during the Korean War. He moved to Baltimore in 1956 and joined the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's personnel staff.

A team of American doctors flew secretly to Vienna, Austria, in mid-December to assist in the care of the poisoned Ukrainian presidential candidate, Viktor A. Yushchenko, who later triumphed in an election to become Ukraine's president, doctors involved in the case said recently. The doctors, from the University of Virginia, went at the invitation of the Austrian physicians treating Yushchenko. But the Europeans started consulting other international specialists in toxicology and bioterrorism months earlier, after they became convinced that Yushchenko, who fell ill in early September, was a victim of foul play.

HELEN RIDGELY LYON VAN NESS, 59, passed away on February 23, 2005 at the University of Virginia Hospital after a brief illness. She was a long time resident of Harrisonburg, Virginia. She graduated from Calvert School in Baltimore, Garrison Forest School in Garrison and Towson University in Towson. She was the daughter of the late Carroll Van Ness, Jr. and Helen Gill Lyon of Owings Mills. She is survived by her brother, Carroll Van Ness, III of Lutherville; her sister, Frances Lyon Van Ness of Kent Island, Maryland; her two sons, Ian Christopher Vining of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Neil Carroll Vining, M.D. of Seattle, Washington and two grandchildren.
