Dr. Michael P. McCarthy, a historian who studied urban issues, died of a heart attack Sunday at Sinai Hospital. The Roland Park resident was 67. Born in Rye, N.Y., he earned a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a master's degree at the Johns Hopkins University. He had a doctorate in history from Northwestern University. Before joining the University of Baltimore faculty in 1991, he taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the University of Pennsylvania and at Gwynedd-Mercy College in suburban Philadelphia.

Robin J. Holt, a speech and drama teacher who directed and performed with several Baltimore theater companies, died Monday of heart failure at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The lifelong Parkville resident was 52. For more than 30 years, Mr. Holt was a well-known fixture in community theater, directing or acting in productions at the Vagabond Players, Fells Point Corner Theater, Theater Hopkins, Spotlighters and Paragon Theater. He was a founder of the Baltimore Laboratory Theater at the University of Baltimore and the Millennium Theater Co. In 1990, he directed "The Heiress," which marked the Vagabond Players' 75th anniversary season.

Joseph Schnaper, a semiretired developer and veteran of two wars, died Thursday of liver cancer at his Pikesville home. He was 86. Mr. Schnaper was born in Baltimore, the son of Russian immigrants, and raised on Presstman Street. He was a 1938 graduate of City College and was studying for an accounting degree at the University of Baltimore when he enlisted in the Army in 1942. Mr. Schnaper, who attained the rank of captain, served with Gen. Douglas MacArthur's forces in the Pacific during World War II. It was in Manila that Mr. Schnaper met the former Leonore Stein, who with her parents and sister had fled to the Philippines to escape Nazi Germany.

Through a partnership with the University of Baltimore, Carroll Community College will provide students in the computer information systems program an easier transition to finish a bachelor's degree, college officials said. The agreement creates a seamless transfer from one school to another, as it takes the guesswork out of planning schedules for students who intend to continue academic study, officials said last week. The agreement with the University of Baltimore is one of more than 10 established between Carroll and other four-year institutions that allow students in various programs to easily continue their education at other schools, said Kristine DeWitt, director of transfer and retention at Carroll.

The Alumni and Friends Association of Anne Arundel Community Collegeseeks a recent graduate to reward with a scholarship this June to attend the University of Baltimore.The association's Wilson Scholarship honors Theodore Halber Wilson, 1940-1961 president of the University of Baltimore.Candidates for the estimated $3,200 scholarship must have earned an associate in arts degree from Anne Arundel Community College between December 1985 and May 1990. Other requirements include a 3.25 grade point average in a program that matches university programs; ability to enroll for the fall 1991 semester; no degree beyond associate inarts; and submission of a 250 word essay on "What Will the Wilson Scholarship Mean to Me?"
