A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Salisbury State University for Mike McGlinchey, the former Salisbury football and wrestling and Frostburg State football coach who died Monday from complications of a neuromuscular disorder.The family will receive visitors from 1: 30 until 2 p.m in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, and requests that any memorial contributions be made to the New England Medical Center; Salisbury State University Foundation Inc./Football; Salisbury State University Foundation Inc./Wrestling, or Friends of Football (Frostburg State)

On January 3, 2008, GLADYS GRIMES (nee Carpenter) GRIMES, formerly of Reisterstown. Survived by daughter Joan G. Luerssen, one granddaughter Amy L. Thien, two great-grandchildren and two nieces Peggy Eline and Nancy Dietrich. Services will be held at St. Thomas Church, 232 St. Thomas Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117 on Tuesday, April 8, at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in church cemetery. Family will receive friends following service at the church. Contributions to: St. Thomas Church or to the Towson University Foundation (College of Education-General Scholarship)

Already removed as head of Bowie State University's fund-raising organization, Russell A. Davis resigned yesterday as the school's vice president of student affairs amid accusations that he has been lying about his academic credentials.Davis, who for six years had been responsible for making sure students completed their degrees, appears to have been falsely claiming a master's and a doctorate in education from the University of Maryland at College Park, university officials said.The university has no evidence that he earned those degrees, said John Lippincott, the university system's associate vice chancellor for advancement.

FROSTBURG -- Frostburg State University Foundation Inc. officials continued to spend money on political events after being warned by a foundation member in August 1988 that such contributions were "flatly" barred by federal tax laws.Foundation director Mark L. Atchison, who is also a vice president of the university, said those donations included a $100 check written to buy a ticket to a Baltimore fund-raiser for Gov. William Donald Schaefer.Although the governor's campaign finance director said he had no record of the donation, he disclosed that the campaign had received a $500 contribution in 1988 from a similar non-profit foundation at Salisbury State University.

Because of incorrect information supplied to The Sun, an article in Wednesday's editions erroneously reported the final recipient of $300 spent by the Frostburg State University Foundation for tickets to a gubernatorial fund-raiser. The Allegany County Democratic Central Committee said yesterday that the money remained in the committee's accounts.FROSTBURG -- In the past five years, the president of Frostburg State University has used a presidential discretionary fund to make at least $1,240 in political contributions, including $300 for a 1987 gubernatorial fund-raiser, university officials acknowledged yesterday.

A major contributor to Frostburg State University who is on its faculty said yesterday that he may try to withdraw his endowed scholarship fund from the university's non-profit foundation because the university president used money from the foundation to make political contributions.The donor, French professor J. B. Kerbow and his wife, Dorothy, gave about $60,000 to Frostburg State University Foundation Inc. last year for creation of the scholarship fund. Dr. Kerbow also called for the resignation of the university president.

State officials acted swiftly yesterday to remove the head of Bowie State University's fund-raising foundation and vowed to clean up tangled financial problems at the organization.Russell A. Davis, who was director of the Bowie State University Foundation, also faces a state investigation into whether he lied about his academic credentials when he applied for a job at the university, said John Lippincott, a spokesman for the University System of Maryland.Davis told Bowie State officials that he had a master's degree and doctorate in education from the University of Maryland at College Park.

The University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore moved a step closer to setting up their own fund-raising foundations after a committee of the Board of Regents of the university system gave the go-ahead yesterday. The two schools are expected to have their foundations operating by July 1. But they are expected to keep their money where it is, in the University of Maryland Foundation, which manages the endowments for most of the state's public colleges and universities.

Nathanael Pollard Jr., whose five years as head of Bowie State University were marred by a fund-raising scandal that is sparking major changes in the way Maryland's public colleges raise money, resigned yesterday amid an investigation into his conduct.Shortly after a closed-door meeting yesterday with a university system committee trying to decide whether to punish Pollard for the misspending of scholarship money, the 59-year-old mathematician told committee members he would step down Dec. 31.He made no public statements and could not be reached for comment.

Responding to reports of misspending and mismanagement, an influential General Assembly committee wants more oversight the fund-raising organizations run by Maryland's public universities, its chairman said yesterday.The Joint Audit Committee is drafting legislation that would allow its auditor to examine the records of university foundations, which raise and spend tens of millions of dollars each year to support the schools.The extra scrutiny, legislators said, would help to prevent the questionable contracts, misuse of school credit cards and other problems found at Bowie and Salisbury State universities.

State university system officials released a blistering audit report yesterday that blames Bowie State University President Nathanael Pollard Jr. for much of the misspending of nearly $182,000 in scholarship and campus activity money from the school's fund-raising organization.In response to the report on the Bowie State University Foundation and recent articles about mismanagement at the Salisbury State University Foundation, the university system announced the formation of a special commission to review the oversight of all fund-raising organizations affiliated with Maryland's public universities.

He'd golf with them, send them cards on their birthdays, stand beside their sickbeds.His attentiveness helped bring millions to the small state school, but Gearhart also used his position to help himself, according to university system auditors.They say:He forced university employees to do the work of his home-based consulting company on state time.He used a university credit card to buy equipment for his boat and to get cash at a betting parlor.

A top University System of Maryland official said he plans to take action against Bowie State University's fund-raising organization for spending at least $100,000 in scholarship and campus activity money on expenses that include a boat cruise, furniture and questionable consulting contracts.Lance Billingsley, chairman of the university system board of regents, said the board would consider sanctions against the Bowie State University Foundation and those who "were involved in the dealings" when it meets Aug. 28.In addition, the university system is preparing to release results of its investigation into finances at the Bowie foundation.
