A Sykesville family whose home was destroyed in a fire last Sunday may receive help from their neighbors, friends and the Town Council."I would surely want to know someone would help my family in a situation like this," said Councilman Eugene Johnson.Sykesville officials voted last week to open an account at Union National Bank in the name of Nancy Smith and her son, Michael Smith. Although the council declined to contribute town money to the fund, several council members said they planned to make personal contributions.

Carrolltown Center gets new general managerMatt Lattin, former manager of Glen Burnie Mall, has become general manager of Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg.Mr. Lattin, 28, said he has been hired to implement Black Rock Associates' new plans for the shopping center. Black Rock purchased the community mall in late January.Before working in Glen Burnie, Mr. Lattin was the assistant general manager of the Hunt Valley Mall. He and his wife plan to move to Carroll County from Hunt Valley in the near future.

The tide is turning, but there are still a few stragglers -- throwbacks to the Great Depression who are wary of banks and today's bankingtechnologies.Many Carroll seniors avoid automated teller machines, or ATMs, and some do not use direct deposit -- where Social Security and pension checks are deposited directly from the government and former employers into a bank account."I know we should have direct deposit. I've known it for years," said Betty L. Limstrom, 63. "And guess what? I can't bring myself to do it."

Secretary is Gail Terzano of Timeless Creations, and treasurer is Terry Williamsof Union National Bank.Directors are Jean Rauser of Jean Rauser Inc., Linda Schmidt of Hyson's Fine Furniture, and Dot Wilhelm of Rittenhouse Fuel.The group's next meeting is at 7 tonight at Union National Bank. All Hampstead businesses are welcome.

Union National Bank has announced the appointment of Julie Franz to the position of Human Resources manager.A graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, Franz earned a masters of education degree from Boston University with a special emphasis in human resource education/human services.A member of the Society for Human Resource Management, she has lived, worked and studied in Europe and the Middle East for six years.Franz also can speak several languages.Prior to joining Union National Bank, Franz was personnel manager at Eastern Standard -- a national window covering products company in Baltimore.

Union National Bank, one of the few institutions that is older than the county itself, will celebrate its 175th birthday Friday with cakeand coffee for its customers in each of its seven branches.The bank also is inviting the media for a tour of its Museum Room."We have several extant documents and other memorabilia from those pre-Civil War days," said Joseph H. Beaver Jr., president."The old handwritten ledgers tell the history of Carroll County's familiesand their fortunes in a way no history book can capture."
