Holmes, Thomas join Union National BankUnion National Bank has hired two new employees for its Westminster and Eldersburg offices.Robert Holmes will be the manager of the commercial lending department at the Westminster branch. He will be responsible for business development, department growth goals and profitability of the commercial lending area.Gary Thomas will work at the new Eldersburg branch, where he will be responsible for growth and business development in southern Carroll County.

John Nolte joins insurance agencyJohn Patrick Nolte recently joined Carroll County Insurance Agency as an account executive.The agency, at 78 W. Main St., Westminster, is a branch of Frederick Underwriters Inc., and offers both personal and business insurance coverage.Mr. Nolte, a Baltimore native, has more than three decades of experience in the insurance industry.He began his career in 1959 working for United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. in Baltimore.As an account executive with Carroll County Insurance Agency, Mr. Nolte is responsible for overseeing a variety of personal and commercial accounts.

Mercantile Bankshares Corp. said yesterday that it completed its acquisition of Union National Bancorp of Westminster in a transaction valued at about $70 million. The Baltimore-based Mercantile, which is the largest independently owned banking company in the state with $8 billion in assets, merged Union National Bank into Westminster Bank and Trust Co., a Mercantile affiliate. The deal gives Mercantile more muscle in the fast-growing Carroll County market, adding 10 branches and $310 million in assets.

A Sykesville family whose home was destroyed in a fire last Sunday may receive help from their neighbors, friends and the Town Council."I would surely want to know someone would help my family in a situation like this," said Councilman Eugene Johnson.Sykesville officials voted last week to open an account at Union National Bank in the name of Nancy Smith and her son, Michael Smith. Although the council declined to contribute town money to the fund, several council members said they planned to make personal contributions.

Hertz Equipment Rental of Baltimore declined to bid.Bare also bid $66,391.42 each for two rollback diesel trucks.Finch Services of Westminster bid $31,796 on a general purpose tractor.S. M. Christhilf/Modern High Lift of Timonium bid $29,159 on a tandem roller.

The Westminster-based Union National Bancorp announced yesterday that it was acquiring Barnes-Bollinger Insurance Services Inc., Carroll's largest locally owned insurance company.R. Wayne Barnes, who will remain president of the 12-person insurance firm in Westminster, said the acquisition won't affect customers' policies, and no layoffs will occur."If anything, we could gradually add people," he said. "We will still be locally owned."Union National Bancorp is the parent company of Union National Bank and operates 10 locations in Carroll County.
