William H.M. Finney, a retired neurosurgeon who was known not only for his technical expertise, but for his commitment to public health, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack while driving near his home in Towson. He was 79. Dr. Finney was an expert on back injuries and performed hundreds of disc operations during his career. He also helped start Shepherd's Clinic, a low-cost treatment center for Baltimore's working poor. "He was one of the last of the old breed of doctors, who gave their lives completely to the field," said his longtime friend and colleague, Union Memorial Hospital surgeon Dr. William Howard.

Robert B. Russell II and Edward A. Russell: A combined obituary Saturday omitted as a survivor Robert B. Russell IV of Chapel Hill, N.C., son and brother respectively to the two deceased men.A joint memorial service for Robert Bromwell Russell II, board chairman of Union Memorial Hospital, and one of his sons, Edward A. Russell, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The elder Russell was 62. His son was 30.Robert Russell of the 13800 block of Falls Road in Cockeysville and Edward, also of Cockeysville and a student at the University of Colorado in Boulder, were killed Wednesday when their Jeep Cherokee smashed into a tree on U.S. 50 near Cambridge as they headed home from a duck-hunting trip.

A 30-year-old Frederick man remained hospitalized yesterday with extensive hand injuries after police say he punched -- and shattered -- a window of a Crofton night club during the weekend. County police said a side window at Coconuts Bar & Grill was broken by a man early Saturday after he had been asked to leave. Taken to the hand center at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore was Richard Eugenio Antonio Garcia, who was reported to be recovering yesterday after surgery to repair several arteries and nerves in his right hand, wrist and forearm.

Five men were shot - two of them fatally - in two separate incidents in the city last night, police said. About 10:30 p.m., three men were standing in the 4100 block of Old York Road, near Rose Hill Terrace, when they were shot, reportedly by a man who sped off in a green Ford Expedition, police said. One man died at the scene, a second was taken to Sinai Hospital and the third, who was shot in a hand, drove himself to Union Memorial Hospital, police said. Twenty minutes later, two men were standing near Durham and Federal streets in East Baltimore when they were shot by an unknown assailant.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department released yesterday the name of the officer who they said accidentally shot a pregnant woman in the right hand during a weapons search at a home early Wednesday. Officer James Phillips, a 14-year veteran, will be on administrative leave during a departmental review of the shooting, said Lt. Joseph Jordan. That action follows departmental procedures for all shootings involving officers, Jordan said. Phillips, a member of the special operations unit, accidentally fired his weapon while officers searched a home in Pioneer City about 4 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Gladyse Valentine, 85, who moved from Bay Head, N.J., to the Ruxton Village Apartments four years ago to be near her daughter, died Monday of congestive heart failure at Union Memorial Hospital.The former Gladyse Stacy was a native of Tenafly, N.J., who moved to Bay Head after the death of her husband, Lewis Valentine, in 1957.In Tenafly, she had been a volunteer at Englewood Hospital. In Bay Head, she was in charge of volunteers at Point Pleasant Hospital for 25 years.She is survived by her daughter, Ardith Valentine Curran of TC Ruxton; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Although the Union Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine Center at Bel Air opened with the usual ribbon-cutting fanfare last week, the facility won't begin full operation until tomorrow.Physicians trained in sports medicine will start part time at the 5,000-square-foot facility, in the new addition of the Bel Air Athletic Club, said Neil MacDonald, director of operations of the Union Memorial Sports Medicine Center."We're pretty excited," MacDonald said. "We're the first comprehensive sports medicine center to come to Harford County.
