On March 6, 2004, DOROTHY MARY RIGGS VON BARBY, of Frederick; beloved wife of the late Baron Hans Wiprecht von Barby, devoted mother of Hans Wiprecht von Barby Jr., and Nomita Brady and her husband George, loving grandmother of Dr. William Louis Amoroso III, Rodi von Barby and Andrea von Barby Patterson; also survived by 6 step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father Augustus Riggs III, her mother Amalia de Murguiondo Riggs and by her brother, Augustus Riggs IV. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday March 10, 2004 at 1 P.M. from St. Andrews Union Chapel, at the corner of Rt 97 and Union Chapel Rd., Glenwood.

Dorothy Mary von Barby, a Howard County native who married a German aristocrat and was stranded in Germany during World War II, died Saturday from pneumonia at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The Frederick homemaker was 95. Born in Cooksville, the former Dorothy Riggs grew up on her family's racehorse-breeding farm and attended public schools. When she was 14, her parents sent her to live with relatives in Germany. While she was finishing school there she met her future husband, Baron Hans Wiprecht von Barby.

On May 28, 2003, JEAN M. of Columbia, beloved wife of Dennis P. McDermott; devoted mother of Michael and Mark McDermott; loving sister of Linda Wallace and Karen Shea; dear step-daughter of Daniel Fisher. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Parish House (located on Rt 97 just South of Union Chapel Rd), Glenwood. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, Sykesville.

ST. ANDREW'S Episcopal Church celebrated St. Andrew's Day a day late this year - but with a parade from Bushy Park Elementary School to the congregation's new home in Glenwood. A bagpiper led the procession, followed by a horse trailer carrying the altar that had been used for seven years at Bushy Park. A convoy made up of the entire congregation followed behind. About 280 people filled the new Parish House in Glenwood to enjoy the first service held by the 22-year-old church in its own building.

Contributions sought for fund that helps aged in time of need A community fund set up by Vivian L. Reid, former director of the Howard County Office on Aging, is designed to meet personal emergencies of elderly people who may need help with food, utilities, rent or medicine. The Vivian L. Reid fund is administered by the Office on Aging. Reid contributes $1,000 annually to the fund and is reaching out to the Howard community for additional help during the holidays. The fund is intended to fill any gap in services provided by local government programs for vulnerable senior citizens.

My family and I hope you enjoy the best of health and happiness in 1998.The Vestry of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Glenwood has finalized a contract to purchase 10 1/2 acres "just a few steps from Union Chapel," according to Bob Pardoe, planning committee chairman.The congregation plans to build a church on a site at Route 97 and Union Chapel Road.St. Andrew's building-planning committee has formed groups to guide the project.St. Andrew's holds services at Union Chapel and at Bushy Park Elementary School.

AS MEMBERS OF Glenelg High School's Class of 1997, their families and friends crowded into the school auditorium for graduation Friday night, there was much to celebrate. Of the 243 graduates, 140 earned certificates of merit, which recognized that they took difficult classes while maintaining a high average.The class earned 124 scholarships.Noah Smith is a National Merit Scholarship Program recipient, and G. Thomas Finnigan and Christopher Selmer were program finalists in the National Merit Competition.

FOLKS AT ST. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Glenwood like to reach out to the community. Their latest effort is a Care Givers Support Group, which will have its inaugural meeting at 7: 30 p.m. May 21 in the Union Chapel Parish House at Union Chapel Road and Route 97.Why a Care Givers group? People who invest much of their lives attending to the needs of someone else need an escape. This will be a chance for those who care for elderly relatives or disabled people at home to share experiences and insights and to gain release from their routines.

NEIGHBORS eagerly await the Cattail River Garden Club's annual dried flower and herb sale, which takes place Saturday at Union Chapel in Glenwood. Once a year you can share the bounty of the garden club members' gardens by purchasing dried flowers in bouquets, arrangements, wreaths, swags or ornaments.Herbs dried at the peak of their flavor in summer can add seasoning to your kitchen creations all winter. Glenwood's Frankie Pardoe reports that members of the club have been gathering and drying beautiful flowers for this sale all year.

At busy concrete-covered intersections and along ambling country lanes, the road signs in western Howard County give passers-by more than just directions.The green markers, bearing the names of mills, chapels and old county families, speak also of the area's history -- much of which is still fresh in Granville Wehland's head.An employee of the county's highway department for more than 30 years, Mr. Wehland remembers when many of the roads got official names. And he should; he named most of them.
