Catherine Williams Adams, 97, teacher and counselorCatherine Williams Adams, a retired Baltimore school teacher and guidance counselor, died of heart failure Friday at Keswick Multi-Care Center in North Baltimore. She was 97.Born in Ocala, Fla., she graduated in 1929 from what is now Hampton University, in Virginia. She earned her master's degree from New York University in 1957.She began her career in 1929, teaching home economics at Baltimore's Booker T. Washington Junior High. She later transferred to the old Fairmount Hills Vocational School, where she was a guidance counselor until 1966.

As a grand jury began subpoenaing records as part of a criminal probe into Sen. Larry Young and the FBI announced plans to examine the case yesterday, the lawmaker defiantly told his supporters he will take his "people's seat" in the Senate at the start of the legislative session today.In his first public comments since a state ethics committee recommended that he face an expulsion vote for using his office for personal gain, Young told hundreds of supporters last night that he changed his decision after a heartfelt conversation with his mother, Mable Payne.

Edna Romaine Jones, 96, Baltimore educatorEdna Romaine Jones, a retired educator, died Sunday of a respiratory ailment at her Ashburton home. She was 96.Beginning in 1928, Mrs. Jones spent her career in the Baltimore public school system and rose through the ranks to become divisional superintendent for East Baltimore in 1954. She retired in 1968.In the 1940s, she was principal of William Alexander Elementary School No. 112 at Calhoun and Laurens streets in West Baltimore."She was a joy to work with.

Prosecutors charged a West Baltimore church deacon with first-degree murder yesterday after he allegedly shot an irate man in the head during a quarrel in the church's coffee shop as customers watched in horror, police said.Ernest Arnold Jones, 49, a deacon for more than five years at Union Baptist Church and who had once given the victim a job in the church-run coin-operated laundry, is alleged to have shot Frank Harrell with a .380-caliber pistol he kept behind the coffee shop counter."Frank was a man who had experienced problems in his life and we had tried to help him out by employing him," said Michael Dobson, the son of the Rev. Vernon Dobson, pastor of Union Baptist Church.
