A man threatened a clerk at a Ritchie Highway gas station with what may have been a handgun early yesterday and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, county police said.The man, who had a scarf covering his mouth and nose, walked into the Big Red Texaco station in the 6600 block of Ritchie Highway about 4:30 a.m., pointed something at the clerk and demanded money. The robber took the money and ran from the station toward the Sears department store.The suspect was described as a black male about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds, 21 to 25 years old and last seen wearing a brown baseball cap and a blue-and-green-checked flannel shirt, police said.

An unidentified Laurel Walmart employee was shot early Wednesday during what police said was a commercial armed robbery of the store. Anne Arundel County police responded to reports of a shooting at 4:17 a.m. at the parking lot of the store in the 3500 block of East Russett Green, which is open 24 hours a day. They found a 28-year-old man suffering from wounds to the upper body. The man, who is a store employee, was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Two men wielding dark semiautomatic handguns robbed Arundel Federal Savings Bank, in the 2600 block of Riva Road near Annapolis, of an undisclosed amount of money yesterday, county police and the FBI said.No customers were in the bank when two men walked in about 9: 30 a.m., said FBI spokesman Larry Foust. One of them jumped over the counter and grabbed a teller while his partner went into a back room and herded two other tellers up front.The robbers ordered two tellers to lie on the floor and forced the other to open the bank vault and an automated teller machine and fill a mesh bag with money.

A man, armed with a handgun, robbed a Glen Burnie restaurant Wednesday evening. Employees of the Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 6700 block of Ritchie Highway told police a man, in a black ski mask, entered the business at about 9:30 p.m., displayed the gun and demanded money. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash and was last seen running toward Furnace Branch Road, police said. Officers canvassed the area, but did not locate the suspect. A man robbed Farmers & Mechanics National Bank in Columbia's Dorsey's Search village yesterday of an undisclosed amount of money, Howard County police said. The man entered the bank in the 9500 block of Old Annapolis Road about 2:20 p.m., according to police. He did not display a weapon, and he quietly approached a teller and demanded money, police said. After receiving cash, he ran into a wooded area, police said. Police described the man as white, in his 30s, about 5 feet 9 with a heavy build and a goatee.

A man robbed a Papa John's Pizza in Ellicott City of an undisclosed amount of cash Sunday night, Howard County police said yesterday. The robber, who was dressed in a camouflage coat and covered his face with a bandana, entered the store in the 8500 block of Baltimore National Pike about 7:40 p.m. After telling employees that he had a weapon, he ordered them into a back room and took an undisclosed amount of cash from an office safe. Police said they were unsure how the robber fled or how he got access to the safe.

The health insurance giant UnitedHealthcare plans to acquire Baltimore-based XLHealth Corp., bolstering the company's portfolio of Medicare Advantage plans. The plans focus on Medicare recipients with chronic illnesses or other special needs. XLHealth's Care Improvement Plus plan focuses on the underserved. XLHealth, currently owned by management and affiliates of MatlinPatterson Global Opportunities Partners III LP, now serves about 113,000 Medicare Advantage members in Maryland and five other states and plans to expand to six more states next year.

A Chick-fil-A in Abingdon was robbed by two gunmen Saturday morning, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said. The men approached workers in the parking lot about 5 a.m. and forced their way inside the restaurant, in the 400 block of Constant Friendship Blvd. They forced a manager to open a safe and stole an undisclosed amount of money, the sheriff's office said. The men were seen leaving the scene in a black or dark-colored Chevy Cobalt, the sheriff's office said. No one was injured in the robbery.

A man selling produce at a Westminster roadside stand was robbed at gunpoint Saturday afternoon, according to Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies. The employee with Kern's Produce had been selling produce from the back of his pick-up truck and was seated in the cab taking a break between customers when a man with a gun walked up to the passenger side of the vehicle parked in the 400 block of E. Main Street, deputies said. The man pressed a dark colored handgun against the man's neck while demanding money at about 1:20 p.m., deputies said.
