Five starters on Broadneck's undefeated football team have been suspended for at least one game after alleged violations of the Anne Arundel County conduct code for student athletes. One of the players said some of the suspensions were for the remainder of the season. The violations occurred before and during the school's homecoming dance Saturday."This whole thing is very unfortunate, and we have a conference at school [today]," said Ken Eslin, who confirmed that his son, junior quarterback Ryan Eslin, has been suspended for at least one game.

The Yankees may win it all this year in the Taneytown Little League's major-league division. But they certainly won't win them all in doing it.The Cubs saw to that by convincingly defeating the previously unbeaten Yanks, 14-9, Thursday night at the Taneytown Memorial Field. The division-leading Yankees entered the game with an 11-0 record, the top mark of any rec team in the county. But their dreams of an undefeated season were quickly wrecked as the underdog Cubs, only 3-6entering the game and 0-3 against the Yankees, shot to a 14-0 lead after only three innings and coasted from there.

North Carroll is back on top. The Panthers were often one of the area's best wrestling programs under longtime coach Dick Bauerlein and then Bryan Wetzel into the early 1990s before South Carroll, Westminster and Francis Scott Key took charge in Carroll County. But No. 6 North Carroll has rebounded strongly the past two years under coach David Dodson, and the Panthers completed their run to the county championship last night with a 36-28 victory over No. 9 South Carroll. Here's a believe-it-or-not story. In the three previous seasons, Atholton's field hockey team compiled a won-loss record of 1-38 and scored a grand total of six goals. After three games under new coach Jen O'Neill, the team is undefeated (2-0-1) and has scored five goals. "I'm real enthused about opening the season undefeated," O'Neill said. "The kids are realizing they have the potential to make anything happen this season." The Raiders toppled Glen Burnie, 4-1, on a hat trick by Michelle Levin Sept.

MIAMI -- The timing of yesterday's ceremony honoring the 1972 Miami Dolphins was interesting, and it came with some bittersweet irony for those being celebrated. It took place at Dolphin Stadium during halftime of a dramatic 22-16 overtime win against the Ravens, a victory that prevented the current team from matching the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only modern NFL team not to win a game. It also occurred during a season in which the New England Patriots are pursuing the '72 squad's place in the record book as the only team in modern history to finish unbeaten.

First, the open date next week on Severna Park's football schedule was a hinderance to the Falcons' playoff hopes. Now, it's also become a momentum-breaker.Severna Park won its first game Friday night after opening the season with losses to High Point and Frederick. The unbeaten Johns Hopkins football team rolled onward last night at chilly Homewood Field. For the first time since 1892, the Blue Jays have opened a season 7-0 after dominating Gettysburg with their suffocating defense, 27-7, and remaining the only undefeated team in the Centennial Conference. Overall, the victory was the 11th in a row for Hopkins, the longest unbeaten streak in school history. About the only thing missing was a fourth shutout. Gettysburg (4-2, 1-1 Centennial) finally scored after an 80-yard march against the Blue Jays reserves with 1:49 left to play, getting the touchdown on quarterback Joe Gossweiler's 5-yard run. "That's really not our concern, not what we play for," Hopkins linebacker Paul Longo said of the shutout.

River Hill is a team that likes to use the speed in its backfield on sweep plays that land its running backs in the end zone. But yesterday, playing in heavy winds and sheeting rain and against their toughest opponent of the season, the No. 1 Hawks went to the inside and survived on their offensive line's blocking and the jitterbug moves of their high-powered running back, Michael Campanaro. With Campanaro pushing the ball up the middle on two long drives to set up quarterback Luke Hostetler's 1- and 3-yard plunges into the end zone, River Hill remained undefeated and claimed its fifth shutout, 12-0, against No. 9 Wilde Lake.

COLLEGE PARK -Back in mid-November, there was an impressive collection of talented basketball players who came together at Lake Clifton, both new and old to the program. It took no time for the individuals to effectively merge into a team, playing as one from the very beginning of the season. And now - after 28 consecutive wins and the program's second state title under 12-year coach Herman "Tree" Harried - the No. 1 Lakers can call themselves special in a history-making way. With its 75-50 win over Friendly in yesterday's Class 3A state championship game at Comcast Center, Lake Clifton became the third Baltimore team to complete an undefeated season since the city schools began competing in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association in the 1992-93 season.
