Carroll A. Campbell Jr.; and Michigan Gov. John Engler.

To try to clamp a lid on spiraling overtime costs, the Baltimore Fire Department began taking equipment out of service yesterday and dispersing crews to fill staffing gaps.Battalion Chief Hector L. Torres said none of Baltimore's 42 fire stations would be closed, but the department intends to take two pieces of equipment out of service on each shift and reassign crews to understaffed stations. This eliminates the need to call in off-duty employees and pay them overtime -- a savings of $300 per shift per person, he said.

At the time, the discomfort that Leo Gomez felt in his right ankle after sliding into second base was so minimal, he asked not to come out of Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox.Manager Phil Regan remembered this, which made the sight of Gomez wearing a walking cast in the Orioles' clubhouse yesterday all the more unusual. The third baseman has been listed as day-to-day since suffering the injury -- which occurred on a pickoff play -- but Regan said Gomez won't be available until at least Sunday.

There are two things Mary Pat Clarke must do in order to become the next mayor of Baltimore.Unfortunately for her, she has no idea what they are.Take how she handled her recent "endorsement" by William Donald Schaefer. If I were her (or even if I were she), I would have made a big deal out of an endorsement.I would have held a press conference. I would have assembled a cheering crowd. I would have blown up a balloon or two.But most of all I would have made sure Schaefer was up on stage with me so he could lift my hand in victory for the TV cameras.

There were so many boats (108) yesterday on Day 1 of the Laser Atlantic Coast Championships at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis that race organizers had a qualifying series to determine competitors for the championship or Gold Fleet this weekend.Entrants, among the top U.S. and Canadian sailors, will vie to become the top five finishers who will be named to the U.S. Sailing Team; the top 12 will be eligible to train and compete this summer in Europe.Yesterday, the fleet was halved into Red and White classes, with the top-seeded competitors evenly split between the two. The two fleets started as separate flights in the first race of the day. The top 18 qualified for the weekend's Gold Fleet.
