Tara Lonergan and Sydney Henderson each scored 10 points to lead host Mount St.Mary's to a 51-39 win over LIU Brooklyn on Monday night that clinches  a spot in the Northeast Conference women's basketball tournament. After a sluggish start to the first half, the Mount scored five points in the final minute to take a 19-17 lead at the break.  Jessie Kaufman drained a 3-pointer and Henderson scored a basket in the paint to give the Mountaineers (13-14, 9-7 Northeast Conference) their only lead in the opening half.

The host Navy men's basketball team blew a 12-point second-half lead but recovered to top American, 50-44, Wednesday night and earn its second conference win of the season. The Midshipmen (8-19, 2-9 Patriot League) led 26-14 two minutes into the second half, but the Patriots came back to tie the game on a couple of occasions, the last time at 34 with 10:52 to play. But American (10-16, 5-6) never took the lead, and Navy went on a 7-0 run in the final three minutes. Three players finished in double figures for the Midshipmen, who ended a seven-game losing streak.

Troy Snyder hit a 19-foot jumper with 2.7 seconds remaining in double overtime, lifting host UMES to a 64-62 victory over Coppin State on Monday. A jumper by Michael Murray tied the game at 62 with 19.7 seconds left before Snyder hit the game-winner, sending the Eagles (5-22, 2-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) to their seventh straight loss. The Hawks (2-20, 2-9) took their largest lead of the second overtime when Snyder hit a jumper that put them up 60-57 with 1:36 to play.

During a packed town hall meeting at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore Tuesday, campus police said as many as 30 people may have witnessed the death of student Edmond A. St. Clair over the weekend and asked students with information to come forward. About 3,000 students, faculty and staff gathered in the Hytche Athletic Center on the Princess Anne campus for the meeting, where school officials and campus police attempted to allay concerns about security. The interim police chief, Kenneth Collins, told the audience he was aware of "rumors" about possible suspects in the stabbing and said: "If they have any validity, this investigation may very well be over.

University of Maryland, Eastern Shore officials on Monday said state police are investigating assertions that campus officers took an extended period of time to respond to the fatal stabbing of a student during homecoming weekend. Edmond A. St. Clair, 21, of Severn was stabbed on the Princess Anne campus Saturday night. St. Clair's family has said that it took too long for police to help him and that the assailants lingered at the scene after the stabbing. Campus spokesman Bill Robinson said state police are constructing a timeline.

Host Navy (15-10, 8-2 Patriot League) shot 28 percent from the field and 3-for-22 from 3-point range in a 48-40 loss to Army (19-6, 8-2) on Saturday. Points were at a premium in the first half, as the Black Knights used a 6-0 run to go up 17-15 at halftime. Kara Pollinger made a 3-pointer in the Mids' opening possession of the second half to put Navy ahead. But Army answered with an 11-0 run that put the visitors up for good. Jade Geif led Navy with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

A University of Maryland, Eastern Shore student was stabbed to death this weekend during a fight as the campus celebrated homecoming - plunging another state school into grief after an apparent murder-suicide left two students dead in College Park less than a week ago. Maryland State Police identified the UMES student as Edmond A. St. Clair, a 21-year-old junior biology major from Severn who graduated from Laurel High School in 2010. Friends, teachers and family members said he excelled in college, dreamed of becoming a doctor or surgeon and had a passion for producing reggae-style music.

Junior Ian Chiles scored 16 points and hit a pair of clutch free throws to help Morgan State hold off host Howard, 53-51, on Monday night. The Bears (8-12, 4-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won the rebounding battle 37-25 and outscored the Bison (6-18, 3-7 MEAC) in the paint 30-10. Chiles, a 7-foot-2 center, pulled down seven rebounds and had three blocked shots. His 16 points matched a career high set at UNLV on Nov. 20, 2011. Junior Justin Black had 13 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Blake Bozeman had 11 points for the Bears.

Bianca Jarrett scored a team-high 18 points and was 11-for-12 from the free-throw line as visiting Morgan State (8-15, 5-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 74-61, on Saturday. Whitney Southerland hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half to spark an 18-3 run for the Bears. The Eagles (9-15, 5-6) fought back to within seven but never regained the lead. Anthony Hubbard delivered some big baskets in the final minutes, lifting visiting Morgan State to a 55-52 victory over North Carolina A&T in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday at Corbett Sports Center. Hubbard made a 3-pointer to cut the Aggies' lead to 52-51 with 2:10 remaining, then made a layup to give his team a 53-52 lead with 34 seconds left and added a free throw with eight seconds to go. The Bears (6-10, 3-2) led through much of the first half, but never by more than seven points.
