Lazar Hayward scored a collegiate-high 28 points to lead Marquette to an 86-60 victory over UMES, in Milwaukee, Wis. Hayward was 12 of 20 from the field to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jimmy Butler added 13 points and seven rebounds, and David Cubillan and Dwight Buycks added 12 each for Marquette (2-0), which never trailed in extending its nonconference home winning streak to 22 games. This was the first meeting between the two teams. Hillary Haley led the Hawks (0-2)

Et cetera Salisbury's Tavik to vie for 2nd shot put crown Salisbury junior Chelsea Tavik (Seton Keogh) will compete for her second national championship after being selected as one of 22 athletes in the women's shot put at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Claremont, Calif., where Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps colleges will host the event. Tavik has earned All-America status in the past three championships, finishing third in last year's outdoor shot put. The Glen Burnie native will enter as the second seed, having posted a school-record 48 feet, 11/4 inches earlier this week at the Lions' Last Chance Meet, hosted by the College of New Jersey.

UMES men's basketball team gave up 45 first-half points and host Lehigh went 9-for-16 from 3-point range to win, 82-55, on Tuesday. The Patriot League leader, Lehigh (12-4) led by as many as 31 over the Hawks (3-11) in a game that featured two ties and two lead changes. UMES recovered in the second half, shooting 48.1percent from the field and outscoring Lehigh 39-37. But Lehigh's first-half lead carried it through the rest of the game. C.J. McCollum finished with 18 points for Lehigh and Akeem Anderson had 10 for UMES.

Women's college bowling UMES repeats as NCAA champs UMES became the first school to win back-to-back NCAA women's bowling championships since Nebraska in 2004-2005 with a 4-2 defeat of Fairleigh Dickinson University in the championship finals Saturday night at Freeway Lanes outside Cleveland. T'nia Falbo was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the tournament and an All-Tournament Team selection. "Words cannot describe the feeling of winning, it's the greatest feeling ever," she said.

Defending champion UMES advanced to tonight's NCAA women's bowling championship match in Wickliffe, Ohio, by defeating No. 2 seed Nebraska, 4-1, on Friday in the winners' bracket. The fifth-seeded Hawks, who are trying to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since Nebraska in 2004-2005, will face the winner of today's match between No. 1 seed Vanderbilt and third-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson. The final will be at 8p.m. In double-elimination play earlier Friday, UMES topped fourth-seeded Sacred Heart, 4-3, and Vanderbilt, 4.5-1.5.

The African American Golfers Hall of Fame inducted UMES. "The university has been accorded this honor because it is the only historically black college [or] university — among a total of only 20 other institutions worldwide — certified by the Professional Golfers Association of America to offer the PGA Golf Management Degree Program," said Malachi Knowles, founder of the African American Golfers Hall of Fame. The university launched its PGA program in 2008. UMES president Thelma B. Thompson accepted the honors during a ceremony in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. "We are honored to be associated with the PGA and to be forever linked with legendary golfers from this country and abroad," she said.

Tim Burns scored 12 points and Tyler Hines grabbed 13 rebounds to lift the UMES men's basketball team over visiting Coppin State, 66-52, Saturday. Hines also scored nine points for the Hawks (9-18, 7-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), while Kevin White chipped in with 10 points. UMES led 28-22 at halftime and opened the second half with a 14-2 run. A free throw by Burns gave the Hawks a 42-24 lead with 15:15 remaining in the game. Whitney Wiley hit two key baskets down the stretch, helping eighth-seeded South Carolina State (12-18) to a 54-49 victory over ninth-seeded Coppin State (10-19) in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. After the Eagles trimmed a 12-point deficit to one, Wiley hit a jumper in the lane for a 50-47 lead with 46 seconds left. Jeanine Manley , who led Coppin State with 17 points, made a layup with 34 seconds to play, but Wiley connected on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to make it 53-49.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The NCAA and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference officials are reviewing game film and witness statements about a Valentine's Day fight that broke out during a women's basketball game between Bethune-Cookman and UMES. Both schools said Tuesday in written statements that they will wait to hear from the league and NCAA before making any further comments regarding the altercation. The incident occurred in the second half of Monday's game, though it is unclear what sparked the altercation.

Major League Soccer United signs two-year lease to stay at RFK D.C. Unitedwill play its home games for the 2012 and 2013 Major League Soccer seasons at RFK Stadium, which has been its field since the team's inception in 1996. In addition to the lease agreement, Events DC also announced Thursday a multimillion-dollar capital improvement project that will include improved concourse lighting and renovated restrooms at the stadium and new bleachers, upgraded sound system and renovated restrooms at the DC Armory.

Coppin State (14-16) took a 71-70 lead with 46.3 seconds to play when Logan Wiens drilled a 3-pointer. Crowder put the Rattlers (9-22) ahead to stay at 72-71 with a tip-in with 27.6 seconds left.

Shawntae Payne scored 17 points and Crystal Whittington had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Coppin State in a 76-37 opening-round win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Monday. Coppin State (19-11, 13-3 MEAC), got 13 points from Jeanine Manley and 12 from Leola Spotwood. Coppin State advances to the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, when it will meet North Carolina A&T at 2:30 p.m. The 39-point victory marked Coppin State's largest-ever in MEAC tournament play.

Host Bucknell went on a 7-0 run late in the first half that proved to be the difference as the Bison (22-8, 12-2 Patriot League) handed Navy (3-25, 0-14 ) a 64-55 setback in front of an announced 3,894 Saturday. The loss was the Midshipmen's 21st in a row, the longest among Division I men's teams in the nation. Navy trailed just 21-17 on a jumper by James Loupos with 1:42 to play in the opening half, but the Bison scored seven unanswered points, five coming off offensive rebounds, in the final 1:32 of the half to take a 28-17 lead.

A physical altercation between the UMES women (8-16, 5-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) and host Bethune-Cookman (12-11, 5-6 MEAC) led officials to suspend the game with 16:22 left in the second half Monday. Game officials, security and both coaching staffs eventually broke up the melee on the court, sending the teams to their locker rooms. "To have an incident occur is not representative of who we are," Bethune-Cookman athletic director Lynn Thompson said. The visiting Hawks were trailing, 32-21, when play was stopped.

Marques Oliver scored the game-winning basket on a follow-up shot as time expired to give the Delaware State men's basketball team a 74-73 win over host Morgan State on Monday evening. The Bears (5-18, 3-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) lost their sixth in a row. DeWayne Jackson came off the bench to lead Morgan State with 16 points. Tahj Tate led five Delaware State players in double figures with a game-high 24 points. The Hornets (11-11, 8-3) won their seventh straight game.

Josh Herbeck scored eight of his 19 points in overtime as Army defeated Navy, 69-63, in double overtime Saturday. Army made up a four-point deficit in the first overtime and scored the first seven points of the second to build a 63-56 lead with 33 seconds remaining. Navy cut the deficit to 64-61 on a 3-pointer by Thurgood Wynn with 18 seconds left, but Army sealed it by making six of seven free throws the rest of the way. Navy, which has lost 17 in a row, the third-longest streak in the nation, overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to force overtime.
