Here is the third installment of a series that checks in with the seven Division I programs in the state to give a glimpse into the past and the future. Teams are scheduled to appear according to the chronological order in which their seasons ended. Tuesday's visit was with Towson . Wednesday's visit is with UMBC. REVIEW The good: The Retrievers actually regressed in the win-loss column, falling from 6-7 in 2011 to 5-8 this spring. But the team did upset Maryland, 8-7, on March 6 and finished second in the America East with a 3-2 mark.

Through the first half of Tuesday night's game against visiting UMBC, No. 4 Loyola played like it was still reeling from Saturday's 12-10 loss to then-No. 3 Maryland. But the reigning national champion Greyhounds got back to their signature ways in the third quarter, using a 9-1 third quarter to turn an 8-6 lead at halftime into a 21-9 demolition at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. Loyola improved to 3-1 and - just as importantly - buried the memory of that disappointing setback to the Terps, who claimed the No. 1 ranking.

Thanks to decades of celluloid sci-fi, the very word "biotechnology" conjures up images of wild globs of protoplasm engulfing towns and killer viruses floating through the heating ducts. So it should come as no surprise that a community coalition in southwest Baltimore County has organized to fight UMBC's bid for the state's $22 million biotechnology center.Project supporters point out that the center's work would focus on tapping into genetic codes of plants and animals to improve them -- not on creating new, Frankenstein-like organisms.

A bye week didn't mean that UMBC bid farewell to lacrosse. In fact, the team spent a good portion of last week and this week focusing internally on their areas of strengths and weaknesses and trying to improve in both areas. “We really didn't get away from the game of lacrosse, but when you don't have to focus on an opponent, you then turn your focus to your team and just getting back to the basics and all that we do,” coach Don Zimmerman said Thursday. “And with spring break in the second half of that, the guys don't have to go to class, and they're really just focused on their lacrosse and getting extra rest.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Right-hander Zach Clark's first taste of the major leagues lasted just one appearance, but given the long road it took to get there, the UMBC product wasn't surprised by the news that he had been designated for assignment before Saturday's afternoon game against the Angels at Angel Stadium. The Orioles needed to make both 25-man and 40-man roster space for Saturday's starter, right-hander Freddy Garcia, and Clark - a non-drafted free agent who signed for $1,000 and played parts of eight years in the minor leagues before this week's promotion - was the odd man out. “It's about right for my path,” Clark said.

Randy Monroe has resigned as UMBC's men's basketball coach just two days before the official start of practice. UMBC athletic director Charles Brown told The Sun that he was not surprised by Monroe's resignation. "Well, we talked about it, he gave us his resignation," Brown said. "Today is the official date of his resignation. " Brown acknowledged that "the timing ... was an issue," but declined to further discuss the reasons for Monroe's departure because it is "a personnel issue.

Over the past two years, Bryan Harris graduated from Southern High, completed a successful post-grad year at Massanutten (Va.) Military Academy, committed to Duquesne, parted ways with the Dukes after their coach was fired, signed with Wofford and then returned home to Maryland after the first semester of his freshman year. “It seems like every day I'm waiting for something else to happen. It's been a crazy process the last few years,” Harris said. “Everything is finally set now. I can just focus on school and basketball.” The focus now for Harris, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound point guard, will be playing basketball and studying computer science at UMBC.
