At first glance, Ty Lanahan's 3-hour, 4-second finish in the Boston Marathon eight days ago is a fairly respectable showing.Lanahan has been running for only a year and a half, and not until this year has he gotten his marathon training log up to 80 miles a week. But considering what he has done in the last half year -- in the Marine Corps Marathon, in the Caesar Rodney Half-Marathon and the London Marathon -- his statment, "I only ran through Boston with some friends," is not idle boasting.

As far as cross country running is concerned, what John Wallace is trying to accomplish is not unprecedented, but it is formidable, nonetheless.Wallace, who lives in Houston and has run marathons in 47 states, wants to run in all 50, in addition to the District of Columbia. When he runs in the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club's Last Train to Boston Marathon in Edgewood on March 4, '' it will represent the 48th state in which he has run a marathon."I'm not unique in that there is an informal club composed of members who have either accomplished that or are on their way to accomplishing that," says Wallace, 50.He didn't begin his pursuit until 2 1/2 years ago and not until he had run 60 marathons, including a personal record of 2 hours, 58 minutes at the Twin Cities Marathon in 1988.

The Women's Distance Festival, the Road Runners Club of America's three-month celebration of women's distance running, continued Sunday with the Baltimore Road Runners Club's Women's Distance Festival 5K at Goucher College. And Stacey Nicholson, despite an inflammation of her foot, continued her domination of area running. This year, Nicholson successfully has defended her championship in the Lady Avia Classic, set 5K personal records in the GBMC Father's Day Run and the Bel Air Town Run with 17-minute, 15-second finishes and set an 8K PR in the Rockville Twilight Run.And despite a scheduled operation this month for plantarfascitis -- an inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot -- that already had sidelined her for five months, she ran only six seconds off her 5K PR with a 17:21 finish and successfully defended her title in the BRRC Women's Distance Festival.

Rick Bingham had tried his hand -- and feet -- at soccer, boxing and motocross, but it wasn't until eight years ago that he took up running. Were it not for a few injuries, he may never had done that. But based on his success in the Twin Cities Marathon on Oct. 4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where he improved his marathon personal record by 10 minutes, he made a wise decision."I started playing soccer in high school, and when I got out of high school, I didn't do anything for a year," says Bingham, 37, of Parkville.

Forget the 13 miles, 192 1/2 yards. For Kenya's Gabriel Muchiri, the winner of the Baltimore Running Festival's half-marathon, there's little difference between that distance and the full marathon. He should know. Two weeks ago, he finished third in Minnesota's Twin Cities Marathon. Yesterday, he won the inaugural running of the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Half-Marathon at M&T Bank Stadium in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 55 seconds. Muchiri said the strategy is much the same for both distances.

Maybe Ed Benham is a world-class runner because he hasn't been at itlong enough to wear out his body. After all, he began running on a whim just 12 years ago -- when he was 72.Without any training, the 5-foot-5-inch retired jockey entered a 10-mile race in Ocean City with his oldest son. He won a $50 gift certificate and a first prize in his age group. "And I ran fast," said Benham with a big grin.Today, Benham's speed has earned him so many medals he no longer keeps count. "The walls are lined with them," said the Glen Burnie resident, shrugging.
