If Calvert Hall and Loyola had to play their annual Turkey Bowl football game on a sandlot field with just 45 people milling around, it would still be the knock-down, drag-out battle it has been for the last 91 years. Rivalries like this don't wither because the venue is smaller or the league adds a championship game on the previous weekend. "It doesn't really matter," Cardinals coach Donald Davis said. "It's still Calvert Hall-Loyola. " While maintaining its Thanksgiving Day tradition, this year's Turkey Bowl has a couple new twists.

He lives a continent away, and serves aboard an aircraft carrier soon to be deployed to the Arabian Sea. But a 3,000-mile stretch won't stop Lieutenant Commander Scott Brown, USN, from rooting on Loyola, his alma mater, in Thursday's Turkey Bowl football game against archrival Calvert Hall. "If we win, no matter where I am - Iraq, Japan or Norfolk - I give a little fist pump," said Brown, one-time star running back for the Dons. "If we lose, well . . . a loss is uncalled for, it's ridiculous.

Unemployment is high, national debt is mounting and the government appears utterly incapable of doing anything productive. The Middle East is roiled, Europe is teetering on the brink of financial collapse, and China is beefing up its military. But the real threat to America may be this: Toys "R" Us is opening at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Walmart stores will open at 10 (two hours earlier than last year), and Target, Macy's, Kohls, Best Buy and others will open at midnight. Is nothing sacred?

Leading up to the big Diner reunion on Dec. 10, The Charles is showing a retrospective of Barry Levinson's "Baltimore films. " The screenings begin on Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, with "Avalon "(1990).  Ask 10 people what their favorite moment from the movie is, and all 10 will say it's Lou Jacobi's Thanksgiving Day tantrum. Late again for dinner, Jacobi's Uncle Gabe is stunned to discoverer that his family, this time, didn't wait for him. Roger Ebert called "You cut the turkey without me?

This year, 18 of us will get together for Thanksgiving. We all have food assignments. Mine has always been the turkey, the stuffing and the gravy. And since Thanksgiving is filled with tradition, we have always, always eaten a Butterball turkey. Not only do we slice up the big bird on Thursday, but the leftovers come out of the refrigerator on Friday and we have Thanksgiving dinner for lunch. So basically, I'm cooking turkey for 36. A few years ago, I ran all over North County looking for a large turkey.

The dish: turkey and cheddar wrap The popular Charles Street mainstay, David and Dad's, has opened a cafe inside the Enoch Pratt Free Library 's Southeast Anchor branch in Highlandtown. The Highlandtown location has nothing like the full menu at the restaurant's 334 N. Charles St. digs or the Express shop at 1 N. Charles St. The library location is stocked with meals prepared at the parent shop and really feels more like what it's meant to be: a quick-stop coffee shop.
