The first time, Troy Davis came within 24 hours of death. The second time, he came within two. Last year, it was a Georgia clemency board that stepped in to block his execution. Last month, it was the Supreme Court. Mr. Davis, 39, the convicted killer of Mark MacPhail, a Savannah police officer, was granted a stay to allow the court to consider whether to hear his appeal for a new trial. A decision is expected today. When news of Mr. Davis' latest reprieve broke, Mr. MacPhail's family reacted as you would expect.

Ravens 19, Jets 3 STRATEGY: Instead of trying conventional methods against a stout Jets defense led by Muhammad Wilkerson, the Ravens got creative. They utilized a variation of the wildcat , albeit with backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor lining up at quarterback and Joe Flacco reluctantly splitting out at wide receiver five times. Taylor got a dozen snaps, rushing for seven yards with one catch for six yards and an incompletion on his lone throw. Eventually, the Jets caught on and stopped the gadgetry.

The George Zimmerman verdict continues to reverberate across the nation, and the nation is coming to terms with the purported notion that we live in post-racial society. I didn't know Trayvon Martin. But nearly a month after the Florida teen was killed, in February 2012, someone I did know, a young 23-year-old black man named Brandon Simms, was murdered in McCulloh Homes in Baltimore's Upton community. In all probability, other young black men killed him. Brandon had reportedly been involved in the drug trade in his past, but he had turned his life around and was working and earning money legitimately.

The death penalty debate in Maryland is finally over. This spring's decision by the General Assembly to replace the death penalty with life without parole was cemented last week, when right-wing activists failed to muster enough signatures to force the issue onto the ballot. We, the people of Maryland, have sent a clear and firm message: capital punishment belongs in our past, not our future. In doing so, we have joined New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Illinois and Connecticut as the sixth state in six years and 18th in the nation to abolish the death penalty.

"Hello. It's so good to see you again. I met you a couple of weeks ago at the museum," the nice lady said to me. "I'm so glad you could come to this. " "This" was the sendoff for the president of the Friends of Trees in Portland, Ore. I was videotaping a play involving some friends who were popping out like gnomes and fairies in the forest in the upper northwest part of the city. I was also on jet lag. "No," I said to her. "I just arrived in Portland yesterday. " "Oh, yes," she insisted, "it was you I met at the museum.

Ignoring the millions treatment has saved? Annie Siple has the right to eschew chemotherapy for her breast cancer, but in highlighting her view that chemotherapy is a "poison," I fear The Baltimore Sun ignores the success many women have had with traditional treatments ("The trial of their lives," Oct. 12). Breast cancer mortality rates have been dropping steadily since 1990 because of earlier detection and better treatments, including treatments that involve chemotherapy. Women today have a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer, but the chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Of course, we need to improve those odds even further, and I commend The Baltimore Sun for publishing a six-part series on one doctor's work to develop a breast cancer vaccine.
