Nearly 6,000 feet of South County shoreline will be converted into a public park with a nature center, a fishing pier, trails, three ball fields, and picnic and camping areas, according to a plan unveiled yesterday by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks.Beverly-Triton Beach Park in Mayo probably will become an educational and family-oriented activities center, county officials said. The 340-acre bay-front park was purchased by the county in 1984 for about $2.9 million to save it from being developed for housing and has been undisturbed since then.

The auctioning of a large condo conversion project in Baltimore County drew a crowd of gawkers yesterday but only one bid - from the foreclosing lender. The 508-unit Rodgers Forge Condominiums, an apartment complex near Towson, was in the midst of being renovated and sold as condos. It is one of at least three local projects owned by Triton Real Estate Partners that have been or are scheduled to be auctioned. Twelve already sold condo units at the Rodgers Forge complex were not included in the auction.

Amerada Hess Corp. will buy Triton Energy Limited for about $2.6 billion in cash, the companies said yesterday. Amerada Hess, based in New York, will pay $45 a share for Triton, of Dallas, and assume $500 million in Triton's debt. That price represented a premium of 50 percent over Triton's Monday closing stock price. The deal has the support of the buyout firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Inc., which owns 38 percent of Triton. Shares of Triton soared $14.53, or 48.6 percent, to close at $44.43 yesterday on the New York Stock Exchange.

The recent rise in foreclosures isn't hitting only homeowners. An apartment complex just north of Baltimore that is in the midst of being converted to condominiums is in default and is to be auctioned off next month, the auctioneer said yesterday. Renovations of the 508-unit Rodgers Forge Condominiums, built about 1955, began last year as the cool-down in the housing market accelerated. Developer Triton Rodgers Forge LLC, confident that the auction won't occur, is refinancing the property and expects to finish the process by April 30. "Once the refinance is complete, the developer intends to recommence construction at the site, and the foreclosure proceedings will be moot," said Eddie Price, general counsel for Annapolis-based Triton Real Estate Partners, of which Triton Rodgers Forge is an affiliate.

For almost half a century, Beverly-Triton Beach, a pristine white sand beach south of Annapolis, was the most popular private resort on the Chesapeake Bay, bustling with cabanas and sunbathers, big bands and clutches of jingling slot machines.But for 30 years now, the last half of them as a county park, it has been nearly deserted.That a stunning 340-acre stretch of undeveloped bay front in a county with thousands of sand-starved residents has remained virtually unused for so long is a testimony to the power of exclusion.

The beach at southern Anne Arundel County's Franklin Point lies at the edge of 400 undisturbed acres and offers stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay. Public money has been approved to begin planning for a park there. Some who live nearby hope that history isn't repeated. They remember how plans to develop a nearby waterfront property, Beverly Triton Beach, dissolved amid complaints from the community. The memories of that controversy led some to argue that planning money for a park at Franklin Point should have been cut from the recently adopted county budget.

Last weekend was one of the busiest of the year for the little Eastern Shore town of Oxford, as the annual summer regatta descended upon the Tred Avon Yacht Club, bringing big boats and one-design racers in droves to share the fun.The big boats of the seven mid-Chesapeake PHRF splits, along with MORC and Triton racers, began the event last Friday with a race from Annapolis to Oxford. In light and dying breeze, however, even with the course shortened to 21.2 miles from its originally scheduled length of 29 miles, dozens of dropouts were unable to finish the race, and many classes showed a wide variation in finish times.

The thermometer read 60 degrees, but things were smoldering on Beverly-Triton Beach -- at least for the horseshoe crabs.In their world, this bit of the Mayo Peninsula in Anne Arundel County was the hottest spot in the Chesapeake Bay. And with a full moon and high tide, yesterday's predawn hours should have seen the annual peak for horseshoe procreation.But only 73 of the prehistoric creatures were found at the water's edge at 5:30 a.m. Biologists from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources counted 597 horse shoe crabs last year.

The sculptures of William F. Duffy, now on view at Galerie Francoise, may look appropriate in certain places. A gallery of contemporary art is not one of them.Duffy is a sought-after commission artist whose works decorate malls and other structures from coast to coast and even internationally. He has been commissioned to execute works for places as far-flung as San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago and Athens -- Greece, not Georgia. Locally, Duffy has executed works for the Benton Building on Fayette Street near City Hall, the library at the White Marsh planned community in eastern Baltimore County and the Symphony Woods office center in Columbia.
