First in a series of occasional articles Erin Triplett's life shifted in a flash. Within months, the mortgage loan officer earning six figures in commissions was out of work, scrambling to launch a small business from an Anne Arundel County townhouse shared with roommates. Change came fast, too, for Bob Harris. The Washington County plant that employed him for nearly 35 years halted production in March, leaving him jobless for the first time since high school. A lean year lies ahead before he moves toward his vision of making a living laying bricks and planting shrubs.

Somewhere in his past, recent or distant, Paul Triplett must have gotten a four-of-a-kind in a poker game, hit on a 16 playing blackjack and won or just plain had a really good day in Vegas or Atlantic City. What else explains the remarkable run of good fortune Triplett is having as athletic director at Mount St. Joseph, which has No. 1 teams in three sports, boys basketball, indoor track and wrestling? "It's been fun for me as the athletic director because the kids have been doing such a great job and they work their butts off," Triplett said.

Kirk Triplett can remember exactly where he was at Augusta National, and what he was thinking as the final round of the 2001 Masters unfolded. "I had a short eagle putt on the 13th hole to get within one of Tiger [Woods]," Triplett recalled earlier this year. "My mind just raced forward and I played the next four or five holes in my head before I hit the putt, and the next thing I remember I was looking at a 4-footer just to make birdie. My mind had gotten away from me there." And so did any chance of Triplett catching Woods, who would go on to win the second of his three Masters titles.

MORE THAN 13 million people in the United States have had a near-death experience, according to the literature of the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS). Many who come close to dying experience "something" that changes their lives. The experience is often difficult to describe, said IANDS President Bill Taylor, chairman of the organization's Maryland chapter. All near-death experiences are different, but they share common elements. Most people who have near-death experiences "probably undergo a personality change," Taylor said.
