Westminster's stranglehold on the Carroll County track and field championships continued yesterday as the Owls dominated the field events at Western Maryland College. The boys team won its 20th straight championship, defeating runner-up South Carroll, 134-91, and the girls team flagged down its seventh straight title, defeating runner-up South Carroll, 149-85 1/2 . "It wasn't as close with South Carroll as I thought it'd be," Owls boys coach Jim Shank said. "Our 1-2 finish in the discus was a surprise, and you can't replace a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault.

Performer of the Year, Lamar Clayton, Havre de Grace Winless at the Harford County championships last spring, the senior made amends at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference meet. Clayton won three times, claiming the 110 high hurdles in 14.88 seconds, the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.58 and the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 8 1/2 inches. After grabbing Class 1A North regional crowns in all three events, Clayton nearly repeated that accomplishment at the state meet. He captured the 110 high hurdles in 15 1/4 and the triple jump with a mark of 43-8 1/2 . Coach of the Year Don Mickey, C.M. Wright The Mustangs, who had captured 14 of the past 18 county titles, continued their ways in the inaugural Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference.

J. D. Nelson Gilman, boys lacrosse The senior helped Gilman continue its quick rise to the No. 1 ranking in The Sun's boys lacrosse poll, scoring five goals, notching three assists and dominating faceoffs as the Greyhounds defeated then-No. 1 Loyola, 13-11, and then-No. 2 McDonogh, 13-11. Against Loyola, Nelson scored twice, won 16 faceoffs and had an assist. Against McDonogh, Nelson scored three times, notched two assists and won 15 of 20 faceoffs. He will attend Cornell this fall. Shayla Moore Long Reach, track Moore finished third at the Penn Relays and set a Howard County record by jumping 39 feet, 6 1/2 inches in the triple jump.

Performer of the Year Girls track Michelle Newman Eastern Tech The junior had the area's top triple jump this year, 40 feet, 5 inches, at the Baltimore County meet. Newman moved on to take the Class 2A state title in both the long and triple jumps. She demonstrated her versatility there, as she finished second in the 200, competing in the triple jump while going through the preliminaries for that race. Coaches of the Year Shedrick Elliott and Melissa Mikula Western Tech Elliott and Mikula took over the program just a few weeks before practice began and guided the Wolverines to a fine season.

Hammond or Oakland Mills should win the county boys outdoor track championship this season, but Howard and Centennial will put pressure on.Hammond, the defending county champion, has two major scoring weapons in hurdler Robert Sharps and jumper Kris Jefferson. Both are seniors.Sharps, seventh in 55-meter hurdles at the National High School Indoor championships, should win the 110 and 300 hurdles and will compete in the triple jump and on a relay team. At the states last season, Sharps won the 110, was second in the 300 and fourth in the triple jump.

LANDOVER - Reservoir sophomore LeKesha Manning recorded three victories to pace the No. 9 Gators to the girls team title last night in the second installment of the Anne Arundel-Howard County Challenge at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. Manning claimed the 55 in 6.9 seconds, teamed with seniors Melissa Gardner and Jocelyn Sprague and sophomore Jenae Pierre to take the 800 relay in 1 minute, 52.2 seconds, and joined Gardner, Sprague and sophomore Shaakira Raheem to win the 1,600 relay in 4:24.

North County edged Meade's boys, and Old Mill's girls ran away from the competition at yesterday's Anne Arundel County track and field championships at Annapolis High School.On the boys' side, the Knights of coach Ed Harte totaled 105 points to Meade's 95.Coach Mike Marcus' Patriots girls were as steady in piling up the points as was rain that persistently fell the last couple hours of the meet. Old Mill rang up 150 points, 67 better than runner-up Glen Burnie (83).Kiki Ellis was a double winner for the champion Knights, who took a total of four gold medals.

Last week, Raina Domneys and Todd Singleton went together to the Old Mill junior prom. Yesterday, they had another great date.Domneys and Singleton won the triple jump and high jump, respectively, helping the Patriots to a good start in the first day of Class 3A-4A competition in the state track and field championships at Western Maryland College.Class 1A and 2A competition begins today, and all four classes conclude the meet tomorrow.Domneys finished second three times at last year's state meet, then broke through this winter by taking a second in the triple jump at the nationals in Syracuse, N.Y.Yesterday, her first state title came without much fuss.
