Tres Touche now has a firm date with the Breeders' Cup Steeplechase. That was guaranteed yesterday when the 5-year-old gelding found some additional energy in the late running and scored a two-length victory over Pelagos in the $30,000 Legacy Chase, the feature on the second fall program at Shawan Downs. A crowd estimated at more than 10,000 watched Tres Touche benefit from a ground-saving trip under jockey David Bentley to continue a consistent - if taxing - year in which he has finished in the top three five times in six outings.

Kinshasa, Congo -- Under the swirling lights at the nightclub L'Atmosphere, Congolese music's hottest new star is in full swing. "This love was like a novel by Shakespeare," croons Fally Ipupa as his backup singers harmonize and the single-plucked guitars run circles around each other. "You turn it into one by Daniel Dafoe/ I stay isolated like Robinson Crusoe." Fally, as everyone calls him, has a weakness for Americana. His hat of choice is a New York Yankees cap. His jeans ride low in belated emulation of the boxers-baring hip-hop style.

On a sticky Friday afternoon, an ample-sized man labors up Lombard Street, straining under the weight of a heavy cardboard box in his hands. A rectangular sign rests precariously atop the box and flies into the man's chest with the occasional gust of hot air. The sign says "takebackmaryland.org." The man, Tres Kerns, is a mishmash of visual cross-signals. His hair is almost completely white even though he is still an energetic 41. From the waist down, he is dressed for business in gray wool slacks and loafers, but above he is wearing a sweat-dampened T-shirt with a deep V-neck that reveals an expanse of pasty skin.

Vigil Vigilante Red, Numero Tres, Table Wine ($10). Here's a hearty, fruity, somewhat rustic red wine that is just perfect for quaffing with hamburgers or a bowl of chili. This is not a wine for deep contemplation, but for inexpensive enjoyment. It offers straightforward beef and black currant flavors and a certain edgy intensity. It's a unique blend, whose largest component is the little-known Blue Portuguese variety (which, naturally, is native to Austria). Have a wine snob friend? Cover the back label, serve this wine and ask him or her to identify the grapes in the blend.

Eight horses, including the event's past two winners, are scheduled to jump for a $250,000 purse in today's Grade I Breeders' Cup Steeplechase, a 2 5/8 -mile affair with 17 fences at Far Hills, N.J. Quel Senor, last year's winner for Far Hills-based Coppertree Farm, is winless in three jump starts this year although he took a training flat race Sept. 29. He is prepared in Monkton by Tom Voss, the runaway leader in the National Steeplechase Association trainer standings with 23 wins and $499,675 in earnings.

Talk with Malcolm Commer for five minutes, and you'll rediscover your enthusiasm for horse racing. Talk with him for 10, and you'll be ready to invest with him in thoroughbreds. An equine economist at the University of Maryland, Commer, 53, raced his first horse 10 years ago. Now, he owns all or part of 18 racehorses. One, Tres Touche, a 4-year-old gelding who races on the flat and over jumps, has been flown to England in an attempt to become the second American-trained horse to win a steeplechase race in that country.

Lesbian couples lead lives that are stable and safe I appreciated the thoughtful articles on the vulnerability of young gay men to AIDS ("Repeating the past," June 21) and on Tres Kern's attempt to repeal the new law forbidding discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation ("Crusade against gays," June 21). However, The Sun's treatment of such issues makes it seem as though all gays are men - most commonly, young white men with extremely active sex lives. Once in a while, I'd like to see people such as my partner and myself represented.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. He may be afraid, but I'm not. There is a time, dear Desiree, in everyone's life when they should get drunk with a friend and tell all. We're working on that tonight. You see? I told you those weekend people wouldn't be here; they never are, and besides, tonight, this isn't their dock, it's Buddy's Bar and Grill. That's why I'm hanging these chili pepper lights and handing you this bottle of Tres Brujos Tequila, my dear. The bar is officially open.
