Arbor Day 2012 will be recognized by Harford on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Harford Waste Disposal Center (Scarboro Landfill) at 3135 Scarboro Road in Street. The Arbor Day festivities will consist of tree plantings, displays, demonstrations, exhibits, refreshments and a free tree for all who attend. The goal is to plant 1,200 tree seedlings at the Scarboro Landfill site. The Arbor Day 2012 activities mark Harford County earning the Tree City USA award from the National Arbor Day Foundation for the ninth consecutive year.

Howard County will celebrate its fifth annual "Tree City USA" award from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Schooley Mill Park, 12975 Hall Shop Road, Highland.Participants can get free tree seedlings, attend planting and pruning demonstrations, and sign up for a plant identification seminar.County Executive Charles I. Annapolis has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. It is the 16th year Annapolis has received this national recognition. Annapolis is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program in the areas of external funding and tree planting on private property. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Fort Meade has been named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to planting trees and environmental management.To celebrate, the base is planning an Arbor Day ceremony tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Starr Park.Foundation officials are to present the garrison commander a Tree City USA flag, a plaque and a Tree City USA community sign, and dedicate five new trees, one for each branch of the service."It is the first time Fort Meade has received this national recognition, so it is something the entire Fort Meade community can take pride in," said Col. Kent D. Menser, the garrison commander.

The National Arbor Day Foundation has granted the designation "Tree City USA" to Harford County and to Bel Air in honor of the area's dedication to urban and community forestry programs. Four standards are required to receive the designation: The city or county must have a board or department devoted to tree preservation - the Harford County Tree Conservation District Board and the Town of Bel Air Tree Committee serve in this capacity. The city must have a tree-care ordinance - the Maryland Forest Conservation Act requires a certain amount of trees after development projects are completed.

In the next few weeks, the Norway maples along Main Street in Hampstead will brighten the skies with their soft golden color and fill the sidewalks with big piles of crunchy leaves. For many people, they are the essence of autumn.But for a professional tree expert, they are also a problem."The Norway maple is beautiful, but it has a rank root system that curls up the sidewalks," said Neil Ridgely, landscape and forest conservation project manager for Carroll County Government. "And it only lives 30 to 40 years.

Carroll County's Arbor Day on April 5 was a day to honor trees by music and essay, recognize planting by local communities and plant a King's elm, Hampstead's town tree, at Spring Garden Elementary School.To inspire a future of tree planting, the second and fourth grades of Spring Garden Elementary were invited to sing and plant a tree and shrubs. They enjoyed the arrival of Captain Seaweed, the giant, green-faced nautical mascot of the Chesapeake Bay, who gave away buttons and stickers at the event, which was sponsored by the Hampstead Tree Commission.
