Kudos to Frances Oldfield and her letter ("Signal seen as only solution to slow Rolling Road traffic," Catonsville Times, July 13). As a longtime resident on South Newburg Avenue, I absolutely concur with her assessment of the traffic problems that exist. Fancy crosswalks and other "band aids" that have been proposed at recent community meetings are not the answer. Another significant factor connected to the traffic volume is accidents. There have been quite a few over the last 20 years, some involving personal injury.

A one-car accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 83 near Cold Spring Lane has caused a two-mile backup, according to police. Authorities say a car spun out of control and hit a rail about 6:30 a.m. The accident has left the right two lanes of the highway open. Separately, a motivational speaking event at the First Mariner Arena this morning was expected to increase downtown traffic volume and jam parking garages in the central business district for most of the day. According to the Baltimore Department of Transportation, thousands of people are expected to attend the "Get Motivated Business Seminar" at the arena, increasing the normal volume of traffic downtown.

Baltimore City cuts down 139 trees, and then calls its grand prix road race "green"? Inconveniences thousands of motorists whose cars idle while they wait to get where they're going, then says the event is "carbon-neutral"? ("Race aims to be 'green,' but challenges remain," Sept. 2). The pinheads who created this monstrosity and foisted it off on Baltimore and the citizens of Maryland (who no doubt are helping pay for it) should be forced to spend a day breathing in the fumes from all the traffic backed up at the Camden Yards off-ramp.
