CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tracy McGrady is jumping straight from high school to the NBA draft for the simplest of reasons.Because he can. There are no academic barriers to college, no severe financial hardships forcing him to the pros at 18. He readily admits he's unprepared for the life he's chosen. But McGrady said once it was obvious he'd be a top 15 pick, he never thought twice."I'm not ready. But I'm going to be ready," McGrady said. "Some struggle forever to get there. I always wanted to be a lottery pick."

Wasn't that something? After last week's trades, in which some teams cleared the deck for this summer, and others stood pat because they're already in great (?) shape, everything is now imperfectly clear. We have a better idea of what the landscape will be with the Cavaliers getting Antawn Jamison to help LeBron James and the Knicks getting their second maximum salary slot back after the shrinking cap had whittled them to 1 1/2. What we await are the events that will take place on that landscape that will decide everything.

Rockets star Tracy McGrady made his season debut in a 107-96 win over the Pistons on Tuesday, about nine months after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee. Coach Rick Adelman announced the decision to play McGrady about an hour before tipoff. He said McGrady would play about seven minutes, all in the first half, and he did. "It's been so long since I've played, it was just a great feeling to be back on the court," McGrady said. "Just to get up and down the court with these guys and to be back out there competing is what I missed."

Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady are still adored. Despite having little to no impact, both went into the final hours of All-Star voting in position to start, thanks to loyal fans who still consider them stars despite undeserving stats. And with fans showing signs of getting it so wrong, Celtics guard Ray Allen thinks it's time to limit their influence. The nine-time All-Star said the fan voting has made the game "watered down" and called for a change in the process.

The Knicks won't sign Allen Iverson , believing any short-term gain would hinder their plans to build for the future. Team president Donnie Walsh said Friday the team won't make any additions at this time despite its 2-9 record. He added the decision to pass on the former MVP had nothing to do with Iverson's ability to play or his character in the locker room. "I've always admired him," Walsh said. "I think he'd be a great addition for a team that's in a different position than we're in, and I hope he gets picked up."

During a selection process that will surely hold many surprises, there will be little drama at the start of tonight's NBA draft. But what happens after the San Antonio Spurs take Tim Duncan with the first pick is anybody's guess. With a record 40 early-entry candidates, this draft is loaded with inexperienced young players. Which leaves NBA executives in a quandary: Do you draft a Tracy McGrady straight out of high school, hoping he becomes another Kevin Garnett? Or do you draft a player with maybe three or four years college experience, looking for immediate impact?
