Towson claimed a 21-17 victory last year, while Coastal Carolina won, 31-3, in 2008. ... Towson sports a 31-10 record in home openers, including five straight wins and 12 of the its last 13. ... Towson dropped a 51-17 game to open its season at Indiana, but the Tigers outgained the Hoosiers in total yards of offense, 392 to 360. ... The Chanticleers are fresh off a 31-0 defeat at West Virginia last Saturday.

What's at stake: The seventh meeting between the teams is the regular-season finale for both. Towson has not defeated a Colonial Athletic Association opponent since beating Rhode Island on Oct. 10, 2009. The Tigers ride an eight-game losing streak into Saturday's contest after falling, 28-18, to Maine last week. New Hampshire is ranked No. 14 in The Sports Network/Fathead.

Senior Robert Nwankwo had a double double by halftime, but it wasn't enough as Massachusetts defeated Towson, 86-56, Wednesday night. The Tigers (0-6) committed 26 turnovers and allowed the Minutemen (6-2) to shoot 46.4 percent on 3-pointers. Nwankwo finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. UMES 59, Navy 46: The host Hawks (2-7) ended a six-game slide as Ishaq Pitt scored 19 against the Midshipmen (3-5). No. 2 Connecticut 92, Towson 31: The host Huskies (7-0)

If Towson University President Maravene Loeschke believes what she wrote in her commentary ("Painful cuts TU needs," March 17), then she is basing her decision on false information and without regard to the motives of the athletic department led by Mike Waddell. First, it has been clearly proven that Title IX compliance is not an issue and never was. Second, how are you improving the competitiveness of the entire athletic program by eliminating two of the most competitive teams which have been part of Towson athletics for 80 years.

Maryland leads Towson, 7-3, at the half.   But Towson, playing with its backup quarterback because Grant Enders has a concussion, has:   *twice as many yards as Maryland (225-111) *twice as much possession time (21;30 to 8:30) *five more third-down conversions (5-0) Towson is skilled, but Maryland seems in a funk, right?

Sarah Flynn (Towson) set a Stanford women's lacrosse record for career goals after scoring twice in the Cardinal's 12-10 win over Oregon on Sunday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament championship. The senior's 144 goals break the record of 143 set by Megan Burker (Bryn Mawr) in 2006. Flynn has 48 goals this season for the No. 9 Cardinal. Stanford goalie Lyndsey Munoz (St.Mary's) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, in which the Cardinal earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Thomas Roberts, a news anchor for MSNBC who grew up in Towson, is marrying Patrick D. Abner, his partner of 12 years, at a ceremony today in New York City. Roberts, who is 39, is a graduate of Calvert Hall College High School and McDaniel College in Westminster. The ceremony was scheduled for the Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel, according to his publicist, Pete Sanders. Gavin Newsom, former mayor of San Francisco and current Lieutenant Governor of California, officiated. Roberts was previously was seen on CNN and Entertainment Tonight and Insider.

A 22-year-old Marine from Towson was killed Saturday in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeremy M. Kane was assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Kane died in combat in the Helmand province.

With three more games left on the Colonial Athletic Association slate and tied with No. 11 Penn State for third in the league with identical 2-1 records, Towson is in a fairly comfortable position with regards to qualifying for the conference tournament. But with the aforementioned Nittany Lions visiting Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday night, coach Shawn Nadelen said the weight of the team's postseason future is noticeable. “This is playoff lacrosse for Towson,” he said Monday.
