The Washington Capitals will open the 1994-95 season on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 1, the team announced yesterday.Highlights of the 84-game schedule include the home opener Oct. 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins and visits by the Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers on Dec. 27, Jan. 14 and March 18.Washington's regular season ends April 8 at home against the Buffalo Sabres.

Each looked for a hero, and with 49.5 seconds left, Toronto found one.Doug Gilmour got his stick on the bouncing puck in front of thCapitals net and somehow wedged it past goalie Don Beaupre for a 2-1 victory.The loss ends Washington's two-game winning streak and ithome-ice unbeaten streak at five games.The Capitals had their chances early and late in the final period.Left wing Kelly Miller just missed getting his stick on the puck foa put-back at 10:14.
