The Rev. Terrence "Terry" Toland, former president of St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia who had also been campus minister at Loyola University Maryland, died Oct. 18 of heart failure at Manresa Hall, Loyola Center, in Merion, Pa. He was 90. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Father Toland graduated in 1939 from St. Joseph's Preparatory School and entered the Society of Jesus. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Loyola University in Chicago and his theology degree from the old Woodstock College in Baltimore County.

John Iverson Toland Jr., a retired sociology professor and former chairman of the department of sociology at Towson University who also volunteered at a Govans food pantry, died Saturday of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease, at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 79. Dr. Toland was born in Birmingham, Ala., and was raised in Atlanta and Columbia, S.C., where he graduated from high school in 1948. After serving in the Navy from 1949 to 1951, he served in the Army from 1953 to 1955.

A man was fatally shot yesterday minutes after leaving his girlfriend's home in Reservoir Hill, police said. Timothy J. Toland, 23, of the 2100 block of McCulloh St. was seated in his 1997 Ford Expedition in the 2200 block of Eutaw Place at 6: 23 p.m. when an unknown gunman shot him twice in the head, said Detective Lynette Nevins. Toland died at 6: 44 p.m. at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Toland's girlfriend looked out her front window and saw a man standing next to his vehicle but did not see the shooting, Nevins said.

William Boucher III, the first executive director of the Greater Baltimore Committee, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Mr. Boucher held the top post at the committee for 25 years, until 1981, and is a founder of the public relations firm Boucher Boucher & Yuhanick, now known as BB&Y.In a statement, Mr. Boucher blamed the filing on "an unfortunate real estate undertaking" and difficulties related to his investments in Medical Waste Associates, a partnership that owns a waste-disposal facility at Hawkins Point in South Baltimore.

Freshman guard Joe Suarez hit two free throws with 30 seconds remaining in the game to seal Goucher's 68-64 victory over Capitol last night.Suarez, who had been on the bench with a sprained ankle, entered the game with 2 minutes, 51 seconds remaining and Goucher trailing by 64-57. The Gophers scored the next 11 points. Suarez hit a jumper with a minute remaining to pull Goucher within 64-63. He stole the ball 10 seconds later and passed off to Thurmon Toland (17 points), who hit a basket to put the Gophers ahead by 65-64.
