For Tim McGraw, the process of selecting songs for an album and picking movie scripts is no different. He must respond to the material on a basic emotional level. "I have to take an intellectual cap off and wait to be hit viscerally," McGraw, the 46-year-old country star and actor, said from the road recently. "You have to be moved. Whether it's funny, sad, tragic or even mean - something's got to prickle the hairs on the back of your neck. " Although McGraw - who headlines Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va., on Saturday - has sold more than 40 million albums and won three Grammy Awards, he says he's only now figuring out how to craft the music he wants to create.

When Cassadee Pope introduced herself to America - at least the segment that watches reality singing competitions - two years ago on NBC's “The Voice,” she sang Natalie Imbruglia's hit, “Torn,” to a huge ovation. In a sense, Pope, who ended up winning the show's third season, was also saying goodbye to the old her. From 2008 to 2011, Pope was the lead singer of Hey Monday, a pop-punk band that toured with Fall Out Boy and Towson-bred All Time Low but is now on an indefinite hiatus as Pope pursues a solo country career.

When you get right down to it, Tim McGraw didn't have any choice about becoming a country singer. That's just what he is."When I open my mouth and sing a song, whether I'm trying to sing a rock song or anything else, it's gonna come out country," he says, over the phone from his Music Row office in Nashville. That's hardly a limitation, though, because, as McGraw points out, the fact that he sounds country no matter what kind of material he does means that he can work a much greater variety into his music.

One of the oft-told tales from the Tinseltown press machine is that underwear sales dropped 75 percent when Clark Gable took off his shirt in It Happened One Night to reveal his T-shirtless torso. Urban legend? Perhaps. Still, the film moment was a sensation. Thirty years ago, another Hollywood hunk doffed his underwear and caused an even bigger sensation. But Burt Reynolds' nude centerfold in Cosmopolitan was a delicious scandal for an entirely different reason. Not because he was nearly naked but because he was wholly hairy.

Keith Urban's new album, "Get Closer," had an inauspicious start. The guitars he had long used — some for 20 years — and that he counted as a key component of each recording session, as vital as some of his musicians, were all under water. In May of last year, Nashville was flooded, and Urban's guitars were one of the smaller casualties of the disaster. He thought he wouldn't recover. "It's a strange feeling having these guitars — you feel like the caretaker, and the flood was completely unexpected," he said.

'SNL' goes country, inviting singer Tim McGraw to host the show on Nov. 22 Tim McGraw's spokeswoman said he will host Saturday Night Live on Nov. 22, joining a short list of country stars to host the show. McGraw says he isn't exactly known for playing comedy in his movies, but fans who come to his concerts know he has a sense of humor. Hanging out with Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon might help.
