Orioles reliever Jason Berken made six quality pitches to get out of a major jam in the ninth inning He then made four poor pitches to start the bottom of the 10th, and it ultimately cost the Orioles the game. Berken's leadoff walk of Alex Gordon set the stage for Jeff Francoeur's game-winning sacrifice fly as the Kansas City Royals prevailed, 6-5, in 10 innings Tuesday night in front of an announced 11,986 at Kauffman Stadium. It was the second straight loss for the Orioles (13-15)

BOSTON -- Tim Collins, who managed Aerosmith for 12 years and helped revive the band's career and steer its members to sobriety, was fired Wednesday by the band during a 14-minute meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel.Collins led the group out of a drug-wracked tailspin in the mid-'80s to become one of the most highly paid rock bands, signed to a $50 million contract with Sony."They're great entertainers, but I had a definite vision, and they told me today that they don't share that vision," Collins said after the meeting.

FAIR HILL - The U.S. equestrian team took the early lead in the Pan American Eventing Championship at the Fair Hill International Festival in the Country. The four-rider U.S. team scored 170.0 in dressage to stand first ahead of Canada (186.2) and Brazil (196.2). Individually, U.S. rider Darren Chiacchia (43.60) of Springville, N.Y., leads on Windfall 2. He is followed by Tim Collins (44.40) of Bermuda, on Delton Magna, and by Nathalie Bouckaert (47.0) of Chatsworth, Ga., on West Farthing.

Broadneck athletic director Kevin McMullen offers one of the best arguments for participating in high school sports -- it's a good way to get into college.McMullen has seen 13 of the school's senior student-athletes receive full or partial scholarships or financial grants related to academic success and complemented by athletic participation.Kevin's brother, Tim, athletic director from Broadneck's opening in 1982 through last year, said that number is the most for one year in the school's history.

Scott Boetig knows where he wants to go and how to get there. And the obstacles standing in his way are the same ones he's hurdled in thepast.Boetig, who runs cross country for 10th-ranked Old Mill, isthe county's top returning harrier among the boys. He finished thirdin the county, first in the Class 4A Region IV meet and seventh in the Class 4A state meet.His goals include winning county, regional and state titles, and he's hoping his experience -- not to mention his running skills -- will take him there.

Broadneck senior Tim Collins, the 800-meter indoor track county champion, accepted a full-tuition scholarship to run cross country at Western Maryland College yesterday.Collins is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar semifinalist and has maintained a 3.9 grade-point average at Broadneck. As a captain of the Bruins' cross country team, Collinswas third in the county, regional and state meets. A baseball tri-captain, he bats .381 with seven RBI.At Western Maryland, Collins will major in either economics or political science while running cross country and perhaps playing baseball in the spring.
