Loyola's 3-1 loss to No. 21 UMBC Saturday night was somewhat curious due to the absence of several members of the team, including the Greyhounds' starting goalkeeper. Senior Thurman Van Riper will miss the remainder of the season after suffering serious facial injuries during the team's 2-1 decision against Princeton last Wednesday. "He was in a collision with a forward from Princeton late in the second half, and he got taken to [Maryland] Shock Trauma," coach Mark Mettrick said Monday.

With the release of inside linebacker Odell Thurman yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals' 2005 draft can officially go into the books as one of the worst in franchise history - not that it wasn't already pretty clear. The conventional wisdom is that you can't tell the true quality of an NFL draft until three or four years down the road. But that Bengals' 2005 draft began revealing a lot about itself soon - partly because of bad luck and partly because of bud judgment by the Cincinnati organization.

It was 16 hours after the Ravens had held on for a 20-13 victory over the New York Jets, and Ravens secondary coach Dennis Thurman still had his game face on. He seemed irritated, disgruntled and was downright nasty at times. That happens when a game that should have been a rout turns into a nail-biter because a secondary loaded with Pro Bowl players calls it a day a quarter before the game ends. The Ravens had trouble keeping their focus. Of New York's 235 passing yards, 176 came in the fourth quarter when the Jets had scoring drives of 68 and 81 yards.

In the postmodern era, street culture is the most invigorating influence on American painting, and graffiti artists are the new avant-garde. That, at least, seems to be the idea behind the paintings of Carl Thurman and others in the uneven but lively group show, Anonymous Rage, at Sub-Basement Artist Studios on Howard Street. The exhibition is an off-site venue for this year's Artscape, Baltimore's annual outdoor arts festival that opens Friday. Most of the show's seven artists began as graffiti taggers who later received formal training in art or as art school students who took up graffiti as an extension of their training.
