Texas Christian has a rich football history, going back to the days of Slingin' Sammy Baugh and, more recently with LaDainian Tomlinson. The current Horned Frogs, who take a 6-0 record into tomorrow's game at Alabama-Birmingham, are trying to find their own place in the program's lore. Sophomore quarterback Tye Gunn admits he's not much of a history student, but even Slingin' Sammy would love his grit. Gunn has twice come back from injury in the past year, first when he blew out his right knee last season and from a separated shoulder this season.

No. 6 Boise State uses a 30-yard pass on a fake punt from its 33-yard line to set up a tie-breaking fourth-quarter touchdown and lead the Broncos to a 17-10 victory over No. 3 Texas Christian in a battle of unbeaten teams that were denied a spot in the Bowl Championship Series title game. He had a funny name, a Texas drawl and churning legs that chewed up yardage. Remember Norm Bulaich, the Baltimore Colts' star running back in their 1970 Super Bowl run? He turns 65 on Christmas. Bulaich can't believe it, either. When he signed up for Medicare, he told the clerk, "I don't feel 65. Will you check it out?" She did. He was. The Colts' top draft choice 41 years ago, Buliach caught on quick: he led Baltimore in rushing as a rookie. Bulaich (rhymes with goulash)

Two seasons ago, the Navy football team put on quite a show in the first Poinsettia Bowl when slotback Reggie Campbell tied an NCAA bowl record with five touchdowns to pace a 51-30 win over Colorado State. The two teams combined for a postseason-record 1,183 offensive yards, and Navy was the primary catalyst in drawing 36,842 fans for the bowl game shifted to San Diego from San Jose, Calif. Yesterday, bowl officials reached an agreement with the academy that will take the Midshipmen back to Qualcomm Stadium after the upcoming season, provided the team qualifies with at least six victories.

A new restaurant opened in Boise, Idaho, this week: TGIS (Thank God It's Saturday). Last Tuesday's 29-point home victory over Louisiana Tech was lost in the work week and maybe caused the Broncos to fall from third to fourth behind Texas Christian in the BCS standings. Boise State is back to work on a football Saturday with a huge home game against resurgent Hawaii (7-2), unranked but mysteriously sitting at No. 26 in all three major polls. You tell me — a conspiracy to keep Boise from a victory over a ranked opponent?
